Notes Mustafa b. Abdullah Kâtip Çelebi's Süllemü'l-Vüsûl ilâ Tabakâti'l-Fühûl (Stairway to Reach the Biography of the Elite) is an Arabic book of tabaqat arranged in alphabetical order. (Commission 1987: 372)Süllemü'l-Vusûl is one of the most important works of Kâtip Çelebi in the genres of biography and bibliography. The work contains short translations of thousands of scholars, writers, poets and men of letters who have enlightened the Muslim society for centuries with their views and knowledge and shed light on historical, religious, mystical and literary events, and introduces hundreds of books. It also indicates the names, identities, affiliations and pseudonyms, birth and death dates of scientists and members of various professions, and provides reliable information about geographical regions and places. It is divided into two parts. In the first part, famous people known by their own names; In the second section, people known by their lineage, identity and nicknames are listed. After giving the full name, he states the date of death and offers a brief translation of the case. The work, which has a very simple narrative due to its style, appears as an index of the authors of the books mentioned in Keşfu'z-Zünûn. The inclusion of the author's autobiography is another issue that makes it important (Katip Çelebi 2010; Yekhlef 1999: 150-151). Kâtip Çelebi did not explain the reason for copyrighting the work; However, he did not write this work in accordance with the wishes of any statesman. In the Hatime section, after praising God for completing his work and greeting his Messenger, he uses the expression "(I wrote it) to serve the scholars and righteous people who are the heirs of the Prophet." This statement shows his desire to leave a useful work to future generations from his scientific perspective. (Yekhlef 1999: 152, URL 1). At the beginning of his work, the author writes the name of the book as follows: "Kitabu Süllemi'l- Vusul ila Tabakatı'l- Fuhul, likâtibihi'l-fakîr ile inâyeti Rabbi'l- Kadîr Mustafa b. Abdullah el- Kostantiniyyi'l-mevlud ve'd-dâr". In the lower left corner of the cover page, there is a section that was probably later added to say that the number of leaves of the work is 577 leaves, and the registration number in the Suleymaniye Library is stated as 1877. Regarding the date of writing of the work, the author makes the following record: "... This book was completed on the Night of Power in 1053 (January 8, 1643)." The place where the work was written is Istanbul, and it is registered in the library of Şehid Ali Pasha (Suleymaniye Library), where the only copy of the book, which remains in its draft form and is understood to be incomplete, is located. (Katip Çelebi 1943; Yekhlef 1999: 150) The work is arranged according to alphabet order, syllable letters and is prepared by dividing it into chapters and chapters like an index. In his book, first the names (nicknames), genealogy (lineage) and nisbet, that is, the country to which they are attributed, of the thousands of distinguished people (scholars and writers) in question are written; In the second part, there are people known by their lineage, identity and nicknames (Katip Çelebi, 1943, II, 106 et al.) The work, which is mostly an index to the authors of the books in Keşfü'z-Zunûn, is based on Süyûtî's Lübbü'l-Lübâb fî Tahrîri'l-Ensâb, and the translations here are based on the original work. and important additions were made from other sources. The number of sources mentioned in the work, as appropriate, is more than 100. When deemed necessary, Kâtip Çelebi gives detailed information about the work or works of the mentioned author and his sources, and introduces those that need to be introduced with their basic features. He applies the same style to the aforementioned scholar, writer, statesman and any professional. In addition to stating the sciences these people generally know and their areas of expertise, it also provides very detailed information, from their scientific travels to their level of education and the identity and personality of their teachers. Articles about some Ottoman sultans, Greek philosophers such as Aristotle, Anaxogoros and Plato, and very famous Muslim scholars such as Şeyhülislam Lütfi, sect sheikhs and sect imams are examples of this (Yekhlef 1999: 153). Author, Hz. Although he identified the names or identities of many people who became famous in various fields, starting from Adam, he could not complete or document them. Later, he gave up writing many items and crossed them out. In fact, perhaps for this reason, he did not organize and classify his book according to professions and branches of science, but wrote it in the biography or ansâb style (Yekhlef 1999:156). The section of Süllemü'l-Vusul, up to the 350th page, describes the authors, scholars, and jurists who are famous with their names, nicknames, and attributions. While it includes historians, poets, literary figures, linguists, sultans, emirs and thinkers, the section starting from the 351st page and ending with the 563rd page provides information about the people known by their pseudonyms and their works. An addendum was written to this work, which remained in draft form, by Müstakim-zâde Süleyman Sadeddin Efendi (d. 1787) (until 1175/1761-62) (URL 1, URL 2). Although the calligraphy of Süllemü'l-Vusûl is not readable, its language is simple and understandable. There are erasures, scribbles and additions on many articles. The author generally points to the sources that mention him at the end of each article he writes. It gives source information such as "zekerrehu es-Sübkî, zekerehu es-Suyutî, zekerehu Takiyyüddin, zekerehu sahibu'ş-Şakâik ve gayruhu.." at the end of the article. Sometimes he uses a general expression as "the companions of history mentioned him" (zekerehu ashabu't-tarih). When deemed necessary, Kâtip Çelebi gives detailed information about the work or works of the mentioned author and his sources, and introduces those that need to be introduced with their basic features. Within the framework of the author's explanations and evaluations, the sources of Süllemü'l- Vusûl can be listed as follows: a. Some articles in İbnu'l-Esir's works named Lübâb and es-Suyûtî's Tahrîrü'l-Lübâb, information about the authors of the works mentioned in b.Keşfu'z-Zunûn and bibliographic and biographical articles transferred from this book, c. The author's additions to the information in these works, additional information, inferences, annexations, new information and articles.d.el-Lübâb and missing information in Tahrîrü'l-Lübâb and articles complementary to the missing articles.e. Hātime (Çelebi 2010; Yekhlef 1999: 151-153), which conveys the information given by Kutbuddin al-Mekki in his work named el-A'lamis and contains short explanations informing the reader on very rare and strange subjects. It constitutes the source of works related to asceticism. This biographical work, which contains authentic and reliable information about poets, writers, orators, scholars, wise men, jurists, philosophers, linguists and statesmen, is also a very valuable source for research. It is much more voluminous than Keşfu'z- Zunûn. Süllemü'l- Vusûliçin is the most comprehensive encyclopedia written in the history of the Ottoman Empire. It is possible.
