Notes
The story translated by Ali Muzaffer Bey. The work called Edâ-yı Nezirad, consisting of 22 pages, was translated from the French writer Orelin Schol in 1895. The story begins with the 22-year-old Countess De Mariette Premidis being found dead in her bedroom and progresses through flashbacks. Mariette, the illegitimate daughter of the Marquis De Moreney, grew up without learning anything about her infamous mother. Monsieur Moreney is very afraid of Mariette's resemblance to her mother and raises her carefully. It provides every opportunity for him to receive a good education. When Mariette was 19, she married Count De Premidis and had 2 children. One night while he was at the Theater Italian, he was hypnotized by Monsieur San Vital, who was sitting in the box opposite. Monsieur Vital made some suggestions to Mariette. From that night onwards, Mariette becomes his slave and fulfills all his wishes. When Monsieur Moreney learns of his daughter's infidelity, thinking that their name has been tarnished, he fulfills his promise to the Count and kills Mariette. When the Count comes home and sees what happened, he is horrified and the story ends with the children's cries of "mother".19. Within the framework of translation activities that intensified in the second half of the century, in addition to classical works, translations that would attract the public's attention in terms of subject matter were also made in order to give the public a reading culture. The simplification process in the language was also reflected in the translations and a language that the reader could understand more easily was used. Ali Muzaffer Bey is one of the names that contributed to Turkish literature with his translations. In this sense, Edâ-yı Nezir reflects the tendencies of its period with its subject and use of language. In addition, choosing a work about hypnosis shows the diversity of the translation approach of the period.
