Notes
One of the dictionaries written during the Mamluk Kipchak period. It was written by a Turk named Abbâs İbni Hamza es-Sabrânî from the town of Sabrân in Turkestan, in Egypt, in the house of Seyfeddîn Tükel es-Selâmî, in Hijri 757 (Friday, the 14th of Rabi' al-Awwal) / Gregorian 1356 (Friday, March 18). (Argunşah 2013: 93; Eminoğlu 2011: 18-19).Kitâbü'l-Ef'âl means "Book of Verbs". The work is the most voluminous among the Arabic-Turkish dictionaries written in the Mamluk field in terms of the number of pages and the number of words it contains (Argunşah 2013: 93-94; Eminoğlu 2011: 11). The work, consisting of 173 pages, was prepared using the interlinear arrangement method. While there are 9 lines on each page of the work, there are 7 lines on the last page. Turkish equivalents are written under the Arabic verbs, which are divided into known sections according to the verb patterns in the Arabic grammar. In the first part of the dictionary, from the beginning to the 62nd page, both Turkish and Persian equivalents of Arabic verbs are given, and in the following part, only their Turkish equivalents are given. It is a trilingual Arabic-Turkish dictionary from the beginning to the 62nd page and bilingual in the following part. While the work is organized as an interlinear dictionary, Arabic words are divided into chapters according to Arabic verb root patterns, and the words in each pattern forming the chapters and the inflected forms of the words according to their root letters are listed alphabetically (Eminoğlu 2011: 20-21). Persian translations, which give the impression that they were added to the work later, are written vertically between the Turkish translations or at the beginning of the lines. The Arabic text with vowels is written large and bold, while the Turkish (and Persian) text without vowels is written in smaller and undotted naskh between the lines. Very few Turkish words include vowels (Argunşah 2013: 94; Eminoğlu 2011: 20). There is no information about grammar in the work. The verbs in the work are generally conjugated in the common past tense and each is used in short sentences. In addition to verbs, word types such as nouns, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs and prepositions are also included in the sentences. The work, which has a rich vocabulary, also includes words that are not included in previously published works of the Mamluk field and historical Turkish dialects: kerge "ceiling, shade, covering", orta "nanny, midwife, wet nurse", taplamançıg "disliked", yarguç "hand mill", etc. (Argunşah 2013: 94-95; Balci 2019: 22). Based on the headings in the index section of his work, Eminoğlu determined that there are a total of 3318 words in Kitâbü'l-Ef'âl and that 2302 of these words are Turkish, 637 are Arabic and 216 are Persian. He also stated that the work contains 78 Arabic+Turkish, 81 Persian+Turkish, 4 Arabic+Persian words (2011: 78-79). The only known copy of Kitâbü'l-Ef'âl is in Ahmet İyimaya's private library. İyimaya donated the microfilm of the work to the Turkish Language Association library. The work was published by Emin Eminoğlu in 2011, based on this microfilm. First of all, Eminoğlu put in order the mixed pages of the manuscript, the title pages of which were missing as well as the pages being mixed together. As a result of this sorting, it was revealed that some pages were missing. Additionally, at the back of the manuscript there is a five-page section written in Arabic that is not related to the text. In this section, information is given about the cases of letters and nouns (Eminoğlu 2011: 19-20).
