Notes
A story by Ayaz İshaki. The work was first published in Kazan in 1899. The main theme of the story is education in the new style, which is one of the important topics of the Marifetçilik period in Tatar literature. The main character of the story is Halim. Fatma, who lives in a village, wants to send her son Halim to one of the big madrassas in Kazan. Halim's father, Gabdürahman, does not consider sending his son to education and says that even if he wanted to, he did not have the money to send him to a madrasah in Kazan. Fatma is very determined to send Halim to education, she tells her neighbors Esma Hanım and Kerim Efendi about the situation and asks for a loan. Kerim Efendi, who values education, gives 50 tenge of the 60 tenge annual fee of the madrasah as zakat, free of charge. He says that Gabdurahman, as a father, should give the remaining 10 tenge for his son. Kerim Efendi's wife Esma gives the remaining 10 tenge. Fatma and her son Halim, who pay the annual fee for the madrasa, go to Kazan. Although Halim did not show great success in the entrance exam of the madrasah that provides education in the new style in Kazan, he was accepted because he was considered promising. The student who comes first in the madrasa every year is entitled to study free of charge the following year as a reward. Fatma's hope is that her son will come first every year so that he can complete his education without having to find money again for the remaining seven years. Halim works hard and comes first every year in the madrasa. At the ceremony held at the end of eight years, he is rewarded with the Holy Quran and a silver watch. Halim gives a speech explaining that he wants to be a teacher like the teachers who educated him and to teach Tatar children what he knows. He starts working as a teacher at the age of nineteen in a madrasah in Kazan. Another issue discussed in the story is the issue of giving girls the right to choose the spouses they will marry. Reşit Efendi, one of the rich people of Kazan, likes Halim's well-educated and moral character and thinks of marrying him to his daughter. Since he cannot tell Halim directly about his intention, he tries to get Halim to be a suitor for his daughter by sending a person who acts as an ambassador in such matters. The messenger sent by Reşit Efendi seduces Halim by saying that a suitable wife for Halim is Reşit Efendi's daughter, Mahire. Although Reşit Efendi thinks that he will not give his daughter to him because he is rich, the ambassador convinces him. The ambassador wants Reşit Efendi's daughter for Halim. Mahire is very upset when she hears that Halim wants her and his family accepts it. Mahire loves a young man named Fatih. She doesn't know how to tell her family that she doesn't want Halim. She sends a letter to Fatih, asking that her parents will give her to Halim and that Fatih should send an ambassador for her. Fatih says that he wrote the letter in tears in response, but that it was not possible for him to send an ambassador immediately that day, and that Mahire should find a way not to marry Halim, no matter what. Mahire writes a letter to Halim secretly from her family. In the letter he begins as a compassionate disciple, he thanks Halim for sending him a messenger. But he says that there is someone he has loved for a year, so it is not possible for him to marry her. Halim gives up on marrying her. Halim wants to marry a girl named Aliye. Before sending an envoy to his family, he writes a letter to the girl, explaining his intention and first asking her opinion on marriage. After receiving a positive response from Aliye, he sends an envoy to his father, Gabdürahim Efendi. In the story, although the families did not ask the girls' opinions about marriage, it is important that Mahire did not give in helplessly and informed her of her decision through a letter and did not enter into a marriage she did not want. It is noteworthy that Halim asked the opinion of Aliye, whom he wanted to marry, in his next marriage attempt, and sent an envoy to her family only when he received a positive answer from her. In the story of Taallumde Saadeth, women play a big role in Halim's education in the madrasah. Halim's mother, Fatma, struggles to find the tuition fee for the madrasa. Neighbor Esma Hanım convinces her husband Kerim Efendi and makes him pay Halim's madrasa fee for one year. Halim's mother, not his father, goes to Kazan to enroll Halim in the madrasah in Kazan. Rahime Hanım, the owner of the house where Fatma and her son Halim stayed in Kazan, goes to the house of the teacher of the new madrasah and gets information about registration to the madrasah. In the story, Tatar women are shown as characters who believe in education in the new way and strive for it. Although Taallumde Saadet was technically weak at the time it was published, it was considered a noteworthy work in terms of drawing attention to and encouraging education in the new way.
