Notes
The novel Behice Ziya, which focuses on the world of emotions and thoughts of Pakize, whose intellectual knowledge was constructed quite outside the traditional female image of the period, and is important because its author and protagonist are women. Pakize, who lost her mother at the age of 4, is a girl who tries to compensate for this deprivation with her devotion to her father and the flowers she grows with her father. Although the father, Neyyir Bey, takes care of her like a second mother, he realizes that he cannot provide for his daughter's education due to his civil service. Because he saw the unhappiness of girls who received only Frankish education, he married a Turkish girl who he thought would discipline his daughter better. His young wife, Nimet Hanım, warms Pakize to herself with her kindness and manners, and gets busy with her education. Although her stepmother is an extremely understanding and good woman, Pakize always feels the lack of a mother. This young girl, who has a very fragile and pessimistic nature, takes refuge in reading to get away from thinking about her mother. He does not like traveling and crowds, and spends his time reading Turkish and foreign newspapers. He does not see happiness in marriage, he believes that the important thing in marriage is finding your soul mate. At this point, his approach to mate selection and marriage is outside the traditional understanding. They discuss these issues seriously in their conversations with his uncle's daughter İffet and his close friend Şeref. Three friends spend their time playing the piano, violin and reading books. Pakize liked an article she read in Tercüman-ı Hakikat about love and women and was impressed by its author because of the ideas he put forward in the article. She learns that this person, whom she finds dignified, is Rıfat Bey, the older brother of her friend Şeref, and becomes attached to Rıfat Bey, whom she thinks could be her soul mate, with a melancholy love. He wants to overcome his incomplete subjectivity with this love and describes his suffering in the diaries he writes. Pakize, who cannot show her feelings to Rıfat Bey, gets sick and catches typhoid when she finds out that he is engaged to someone else. Pakize, who returned from death, was completely transformed when she recovered. He does not even look at the faces of his beloved flowers and avoids reading and writing. She marries a man her father sees fit. Although her husband shows a lot of attention to her, she gets bored of being in the institution of marriage and this attention. Pakize has a son and names him Rıfat. Pakize, who is jealous of her son even from her husband, says that she lives only to love Rıfat, and this is how the novel ends. Pakize is important in that it deals with the place and functions of Ottoman women in social life in the 19th century. In the novel, the change in the phenomenon of women is exemplified through Pakize, who is depicted as a deep character who thinks about her own identity. With feminine sensitivity, Behice Ziya deals with the position and possible problems of the educated woman in love and marriage, through the literate woman who has gained knowledge and realized that she is the subject of her life and begins to break free from traditional patterns in the social order. In this way, attention is drawn to the fact that a balance has not yet been established between the woman who has completed her mental transformation and the social life order in the plan of marriage and relations with the opposite sex. The tragedy of the new woman is that although she has begun to change according to the requirements of the age, she cannot be fully liberated and is obliged to seek satisfaction and position within the family order, as it is not yet possible for her to realize herself in a different position. Pakize, who spends her time occupying her whole mind with the books she reads, chooses the book as her companion of fate, follows Turkish newspapers as well as the foreign newspapers to which her father subscribes, expresses her ideas and criticisms on articles in newspapers and magazines without hesitation, and chats about literature as well as playing the piano and violin with her friends. It has achieved the ideal in the system. This idealized fiction implies that women open up to life with knowledge and become individualized in this way. However, at the end of the novel, Pakize's quest to find happiness and satisfaction by taking refuge in marriage and her marriage by her father's decision shows that, despite her innovative experiences, women have not yet achieved the ideal and the same success in the social life order. Pakize, who cannot overcome the narcissistic wound caused by orphanhood, resembles the characters of Servet-i Fünun novel with her very sensitive, emotional, fragile, pessimistic, melancholic personality and morbid mood. This work, which was written during the transition period from Tanzimat to Servet-i Fünun and carries reflections from the understanding of novels of both periods in this context, deals with topics such as melancholic love, the search for companionship of soul and mind in marriage, arranged marriage, women's education, women's liberation, commonerage, and the conflict between tradition and modernity. The serialization start date of this novel, which was serialized in 16 issues in Maarif Magazine, was 7 September 1311 (1895), periodical issue. 4th year 198; The serialization end date is 22 February 1311 (1896), and the number of periodicals is 13 in the 5th year. The novel, which is divided into 14 chapters, contains letters and diaries written by Pakize. There is a sermon section at the end of the novel. Pakize, which remained serialized and unknown until recently, was brought to light as a product of the project called "History of Serialization Novel in Turkish Literature (1831-1928)". It was published as a book for the first time in July 2019, with the original text translated into New Turkish letters and the simplified text.
