Notes Fatih Kerimi's novel titled Şakird and Student. The work was first published as a Tatar text in Arabic letters in 1899. In this work, Fatih Kerimi compares two types of people representing education in the old and new ways. In the 2nd edition of Şakird and Student, published in 1903, under the title "A Two Words", Fatih Kerimi states that when the work was first published, it was not liked by the public, was misunderstood and was criticized for criticizing religion and ulama. Despite this, he states that the first edition was completely sold out and that they published it because they wanted it to be reprinted. In the novel Şakird and Student, it is told what a young man named Aleksey, who boarded the ferry from Kazan to Chistay, saw and what he experienced during this ferry trip. The young man puts his belongings in the second class of the ferry, goes upstairs and starts watching the arriving passengers. He carries a pitcher tied with a large rope in his arms, a pewter teapot in each hand, one of them has a dirty white turban on his head, he is wearing a green robe with very greasy and discolored sleeves, the other has a white börk on his head and a very wide robe. Even from afar, black stains are visible in many places on the chest of the white robe he is wearing. It is understood that these stains are drops of oil that dripped while eating kuymak. Apart from these people, who are noticed among the passengers with their dirty clothes and rude behavior, another person, whom he assumes to be a big mullah who was seen off by a large group, attracts the young man's attention. He wants to meet and talk to this mullah. But first he decides to meet the first two people he sees and learn from them who the mullah is. People around them watch these two people traveling in the 3rd class with curious looks and sarcastic smiles. The young man meets these two people and learns that the mullah traveling in the second class of the ferry is a famous professor from around Kazan. The person next to the teacher is also a rich disciple of his. The rich disciple takes the teacher to his daughter's wedding. The one in green robes is the son-in-law of the professor, and the one in white robes is a young pishkadem. The young man chats with the son-in-law of the teacher and the pishkadem. He is saddened to see that these two men, who talk about various subjects starting from the creation of the world, do not have any useful information despite having studied in madrasah for many years. He leaves them with the intention of meeting and chatting with the teacher. The teacher greets the young man who greets him, but does not chat with him. The young man who wants to talk to him thinks for a moment and finds a solution. As soon as he takes out some money from his wallet, the teacher's right hand begins to move. As he extends his hand holding money towards him, the teacher's hand also reaches towards him. This makes conversation possible. The young man, who was thinking of hearing useful information about this world and the afterlife from the teacher during the conversation, is disappointed. The teacher did not talk about anything other than criticizing the young man's attire. The young man who leaves the teacher comes back to the teacher's son-in-law and his pishkadem. Meanwhile, a Russian student comes to them and greets them by speaking Arabic. Neither of them understand what the student is saying. The Russian student then repeats what he said in Turkish and eventually in Tatar. Russian student talks about education and asks questions. It is understood that they are unaware of many things the student says. The Russian student is a young man studying Eastern Languages. He reads Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Tatar. Even though he is still a student, he is more knowledgeable than the teacher's son-in-law and pishkadem. He travels to increase his knowledge and experience. These two people, who have studied at the madrasa for nearly twenty years, remain silent and helpless when faced with the questions of a student who has not yet graduated from school. The Russian student says that education in madrasahs is behind the times. He criticizes the fact that Tatars learn Arabic in madrasahs without learning their own language. The lack of science courses in madrasahs is a major deficiency. The Russian student explains that the Tsar was fair and allowed to open schools for the Tatars, write books, publish newspapers, open charitable societies, and establish orphanages. In the work titled Şakird and Student, education in the old and new ways is compared and madrasahs that are behind the times are criticized. Those who are strongly opposed to education in the new style are people educated in madrasahs that provide education in the old style, and such people, who have great influence in society, are the biggest obstacle to the innovation movement.
