About: Clear copy of the commentary by Ibn Ḥajar al-ʻAsqalānī (d.1449) on his own Nukhbat al-fikar fī musṭalaḥ ahl al-athar, a treatise on the technical terms used in the science of ḥadīth, summarizing the work of Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ al-Shahrazūrī (d.1245). | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Origin: As appears in colophon on p.74, transcription completed 18 Ṣafar 1212 [ca. 12 August 1797].

Binding: Pasteboards covered in shell marbled paper (in shades of brown, pink, black, yellow, etc.) with green leather over spine (effectively a quarter binding) ; Type III binding (without flap) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in brown paper ; sewn in cream thread, two stations ; overall in fair condition with abrasion, lifting and losses of paper and leather, minor delamination of boards, etc.
Support: European laid paper with 9 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 21-23 mm. apart (horizontal), three hats watermark (see p.65, 66, 75, 76, etc.) and "G F" (see p.78) ; light cream in color, sturdy, burnished.
Decoration: Overlining in red ; abbreviation symbols and some corrections rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of red hāʼ, inverted comma, etc.
Script: Naskh ; elegant Turkish hand in a narrow to medium line ; virtually serifless with slight effect of tilt to the left, curvilinear descenders, some sweeping descenders and elongation of horizontal strokes, somewhat freely ligatured ; some passages vocalized.
Layout: Written in 19 lines per page ; frame-ruled.
Collation: i, 3 V(30), IV-1 (37), i ; chiefly quinions ; final leaf (after close of text) left blank ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes flyleaves).

Incipit: "الحمد لله الذي لم يزل عالما قديرا حيا قيوما سميحا بصيرا ... اما بعد فان التصانيف في اصطلاح اهل الحديث قد كثرت للائمة في القديم والحديث فمن اول من صنف في ذلك القاضي ابو محمد الرامهرمزي ... وامثال ذلك من التصانيف التي اشتهرت وبسطت ليتوفر علمها واختصرت ليتيسر فهمها الى ان جاء الحافظ الفقيه تقي الدين ابو عمرو عثمان بن الصلاح عبد الرحمن الشهرزوري نزيل دمشق فجمع لما ولي تدريس الحديث بالمدرسة الاشرفية كتابه المشهور ... فسألني بعض الاخوان ان الخص لهم المهم من ذلك فلخصته في اوراق لطيفة سميتها نخبة الفكر في مصطلح اهل الاثر ... فرغب الي جماعة ثانيا ان اصنع شرحا يحل رموزها ويفتح كنوزها ويوضح ما خفي على المبتدأ من ذلك فاجبته الى سؤاله رجاء الاندراج في تلك المسالك فبالغت في شرحها للايضاح والتوجيه ..."
