Notes Bio-bibliographic and encyclopedic work on the history and classification of sciences written in Arabic by Taşköprî-zâde İsâmeddin Ahmed Efendi (d. 1561). The book consists of four introductions, two chapters and seven parts. In the introductions, topics such as the value of knowledge, the virtue of education, the duties of the student and the teacher, the ethics of science and ways of accessing knowledge are discussed, and mentality issues are discussed when appropriate. Taşköprî-zâde, who deals with each scientific discipline in terms of its definition, subject, principles, pedagogical purpose and general benefits, introduces the main literature of that field by giving general information about the history or authorities of that discipline. The subjects of the two main sections of the book, called "sides", constitute two basic understandings about the methods of obtaining information. In the first one, the information obtained through the theoretical method (tarîku'n-nazar), in the second one through the mystical purification method (tarîku't-tasfiye) was discussed, and it was emphasized that only those who combine these two methods can reach competence. In the work, sciences are divided into seven parts called “devha”. The sciences in each section are examined together with their sub-disciplines after a general introduction. These sections are, respectively, sciences related to writing (calligraphy and Arabic orthography), language sciences (sarf, grammar, rhetoric and literature), logical sciences (logic disciplines and discussion methods), sciences dealing with the outside world (all disciplines including metaphysics, physics, mathematics, mechanics, medicine, geography and astronomy), practical wisdom (ethics, household management, politics), religious sciences (reading, hadith and method, tafsir, kalam, fiqh and methodology) and esoteric sciences (worships, customs, moral evils that lead to destruction and virtues that lead to salvation). The content of the book is in the form of a history of sciences, a bio-bibliographic encyclopedia and a scheme for the classification of sciences. With this scope, the work has a distinguished place in the classical Islamic "mevzû'atü'l-ulûm" literature. Twenty-nine manuscript copies, twenty-one complete and eight incomplete, of the work, of which there are many copies that have survived to the present day, were introduced by Cevat İzgi. Towards the end of his life, Taşköprî-zâde wrote a summary of Miftâhu's-Saʿâde under the title Medînetü'l-ʿUlûm, and his son Kemâleddin Mehmed Efendi translated the work into Ottoman Turkish under the name Mevzû'atü'l-Ulûm. Miftâhu's-Saʿâde was first published in Hyderabad. (1329/1911) The scientific publication of the work was made by Kâmil Kâmil Bekrî and Abdülvehâb Ebü'n-Nûr (Cairo 1968). The work was translated incompletely into German by Osman Reşer under the title Taşköprüzâde's Miftâh es-Saʿâde (Islamische Ethik und Wissenschaftslehre 10. Jahrhunderts d. H. nach dem druck Haiderabad 1329) (Stuttgart 1934). For the author's biography, see. “Taşköprî-zâde, Ahmed İsâmeddin Ebülhayr Efendi”.Turkish Literature Names Dictionary.
