Notes
The work is a comprehensive medical dictionary revealing Ottoman Turkish medical terminology. The book started with Arabic hamdela and salvele. Following the expression "ve ba'dü", a hadith emphasizes the reasons for the emergence of diseases in the context of the rules that Allah has placed on the universe and, accordingly, the importance of medical science. The author later states that "the authentic books of this science are Arabic and Persian... the curriculum and compositions and commands and interpretations and patterns and patterns of the most ancient names of the Prophets are mostly Greek and Persian." 'Physicians from the Greek lands... who are not writing in the Hebrew, Syriac and Berber languages... are in dire need of dictionaries, and I have been blessed with a collection of dictionaries in this field. Translating the Turkish language and providing a perfect dictionary and guidance for doctors, and they do not need a clear dictionary, although in the well-known books, this hand-written explanation is in order, but the dictionaries that are desired in the science of medicine are made by this poor selection and selection of dictionaries. He informed the reader of the reason, the need for such a work, its name and the title of his work with the sentences "I combined it with the phrase ihtisâr and Türkî, so that it became fehm-i eshel ve nef'-i eşmel and I named it Lisân-ı Etibbâ". Then, the work was started with the title "bâbu'l-elif faslü'l-hemzeti ve'l-elif". Lisânü'l-Etibbâ, an important specialized dictionary, consists of twenty-eight chapters listed according to the Arabic alphabet. Each chapter is divided into two parts: Arabic and Persian. In the chapters, first the Arabic words are given with their equivalents and explanations, and then the Persian words are given with the phrase “lugatü'l-Fârsiyye”. Arabic words are divided into chapters within themselves. Each chapter is listed according to the second consonant letter of the word in accordance with the order “faslü'l-elif ve'l-bâ, faslu'l-elif ve'l-yâ”. Persian words are divided into three parts according to the action of the first letter of the word (harekât-ı selâse), in the order "faslu'l-... meftûha (a-e-â), faslu'l-... meksûre (ı-i-î) and faslu'l-... mazmûme (u-ü-o-ö-û)". In this arrangement, the author tried to bring together words starting with the same syllable, based on the system used in the classical dictionaries of Persian. In the work, there are words that were transferred from Persian to Arabic among the Arabic heading words, and words that were transferred from Arabic to Persian are also explained among the Persian heading words. Therefore, it is seen that the same word appears at the beginning of the article several times in the dictionary, in the sections where both Arabic and Persian words are explained. According to the findings of Demir (2011), there are 11353 words per article in the dictionary. 7799 of these words are Arabic, 3257 Persian, 215 Greek, 42 Berber, 11 Syriac, 6 Latin, 10 Hindi, 1 Hebrew, 1 Pahlavi and 11 Greek. In the introduction of the work, Ibn Sina's Qanun, Haji While the names of important works that shaped Ottoman medicine such as Pasha's Şifa and İbni Baytar's Curriculum are mentioned, the works include "Pahlevi dictionary, Fusûl-i İbograt, İhtiyârât-ı Bedi', Sâhib-i Minhâc, Şeyh Dâvûd, Aristû, Acâyib-i Mahlûkât (Muhammad). Gazvini), Hayâtü'l-Hayevân, Mesîh İbn Hakîm, Sâhib-i Câmi', Esed-i Tûsî, Şems-i Fahrî and Ebu'l-Abbâs" are cited as sources. In the work, which is literally a medical dictionary, the names of plant, mineral and animal origin substances, their properties and their use in various diseases are explained alphabetically. In the work, in addition to Arabic and Persian disease names, organ names, plant names and drug names, Turkish equivalents of Greek, Hebrew and Berber terms have also been tried to be given. In the dictionary, not only the Turkish equivalents of the heading words are satisfied, but also the Arabic and Persian equivalents and Turkish, Arabic and Persian synonyms are given in addition to the Turkish equivalent of the heading of an article. It is a general feature of the book to try to express the equivalents of the words in the beginning of the article or in the description in different languages or their synonyms in the same language, with prepositions such as "like, genius, that is", which are frequently used in the work. Although eight copies of the work are known in Türkiye and abroad, it is possible that there are more copies. İlgürel (1998)'s statement, quoting Adnan Adıvar, "It is understood that Fihrisü'l-Ervâm, which is shown as a separate dictionary in some sources, is the same work as Lisânü'l-Etibbâm" is a determination that needs to be examined. Demir (2011), who conducted a doctoral study on the work, evaluated these two works separately without making any determinations. Demir (2011) conducted a doctoral study on the work, and Kaya (2018) published the work as a book.
