Notes	A small volume work written in Persian against the transition from the Arabic alphabet to the Latin alphabet. The author's copy of the work with registration number Б-2372, kept in the Manuscripts Institute of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, was written in 1298 / 1880-81. The explanatory information in addition to the title of the treatise is as follows: "Der beyân-ı redd ü bahs-i risale-i elifbâyî-i Rıza-yı Rüşdiyye-i Iranî ve gayre be tarik-i ijmal ü ihtisar." As can be understood from the treatise, some Muslim intellectuals in those years saw the Arabic alphabet as one of the reasons for the backwardness of the Islamic world and in this regard They claimed that a reform was necessary. In this context, Reza Rushdi, the regent of the Iranian consulate in Tbilisi, prepared a treatise and proposed a new alphabet for Muslims, consisting of French, Russian and Latin letters. During the said period, Azerbaijani intellectuals such as M. F. Akhundzade and M. Shahtahtinski were also in favor of alphabet reform. However, Nawab displayed a conservative approach on this issue, arguing that such a reform was not needed and tried to show the superior merits of the Arabic alphabet. Two author copies of Bâtilü's-sihr (Б-2372, Б-7048) are preserved in the Manuscripts Institute of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
