Notes Kâtib Çelebi's Arabic work in the form of science encyclopedia and bibliography. While its name in the draft copy was Kitâbu İcmâli'l-Fusûl ve'l-Ebvâb fî Tertîbi'l-'Ulûm ve Esmâi'l-Kitâbiki, in its final publication it was renamed Keşfü'z-Zunûn 'an Esâmi'l-Kütüb ve'l-Fünûn (Kâtib Çelebi 1941: I/7). The part up to the Dotted Zel Section was dated 4 Şa'bân 1048 (11 December 1638), the section up to the Dotted Zel Section was dated at the end of 1049 Rebiülâhir (August 1639), and the section up to the Dotted Dâd Section was dated 1050 Rebiülâhir (July-August 1640). has been completed. According to the author stated in the introduction, until the time when Kashfü'z-Zunûn was written, the books of Muslim scholars had not yet been compiled on the basis of subject and chapter. There was no book written on this subject. Because the number of sciences and books is many. Allah inspired the author to collect the information of the scattered books. Thus, the author began to write down the information he obtained while researching various works and examining history and literature books. He completed the draft of Keşfü'z-Zunûn while he was still in his early youth. When he reached new information, he added it to the draft, and after completion, he whitewashed the work. The completion of Keşfü'z-Zunûn took many years. The author completed his work by continuing his book research and examinations, which started in 1043/1633 in the second-hand booksellers of Aleppo, in the libraries and second-hand booksellers of different cities for twenty years (Kutluer 2002: 25/ 321). Keşfü'z-Zunûnmukaddime consists of the main part and the epilogue. The introduction consists of five chapters, including the tahmid, naat and reason parts. These five chapters, which cover topics such as the definition of knowledge, the emergence of sciences in the Islamic world, their development, borders, benefits and relations with civilization, forms of book copyright and different styles of the commentary tradition, are divided into various chapters. The main section, which constitutes the basis of the work, includes the introduction of books and the explanation of sciences. The short hatime section includes the hope of reaching the goal and gratitude for the completion of the book. The subject of Keşfü'z-Zunûn is the introduction of books (kütüb) and the counting and classification of scientific disciplines (fünun). The author gave information about the branches of science that were among the scientific acceptances of the period in which he lived and introduced the books in circulation. Sciences and books are listed alphabetically in the same section in a mixed manner. Alphabetical order is observed until the 3rd and 4th letters of the names. Works that do not have a special name are placed in alphabetical order by referring to their genre or author, as in the examples of Tefsirü'bni Cerîr, Dîvânü'l-Mütenebbî, Kitâbu Sîbeveyh. In the "İlmü't-târîh" article and the "Risales" and "Works Starting with the Word Book" sections, alphabetical order was applied within the article due to the large number of books. Information was given about 278 sciences and 14,501 works in Keşfü'z-Zunûn. In the articles of science, their definitions, scopes, history, basic assumptions, famous books and scholars, their relations with other sciences and their appearance in other sources of the book genre are included. While the explanations of some of the sciences are kept brief, detailed information is given in some of them. In some articles, only names were given and no explanation was given. For example, while information such as the definition of fiqh, different views on its scope, its historical development, leading scholars, its appearance in different sects, and major works are given in the article "İlmü'l-fıkh" (Kâtib Çelebi 1941: II/1280-1288), about "İlmü Mesâliki'l-büldân" (Kâtib Çelebi 1941: II/1662). There is no explanation. In the book articles, information such as the full name of the work, the name of the author, its content, chapters, number of volumes, the reason for writing, and the beginning phrase are given. If a commentary, summary, annotation, addendum, translation or rebuttal was written for the book in question, information about these was also shared. For example, the commentaries and annotations written on Ebû Ya'kub es-Sekkâkî's Miftâhu'l-'Ulûm are reported in detail (Kâtib Çelebi 1941: II/1762-1768). Although the books included in Keşfü'z-Zunûn are generally related to Arabic literature, there are also Persian and Turkish ones among them. In such cases, the author is “Turkish” or “Persian.” It states this with the following phrases: The author's translations are also included in the book articles. It is noteworthy that Kâtib Çelebi made an effort to state the author's date of death in these short biographies. The author also commented on some books. The fact that he praises the Muqaddimah of al-Iberile in the article "Tarihu'bni Haldun" (Kâtib Çelebi 1941: I/278) shows that Kâtib Çelebi's comments are accurate. The source of the book articles of Keşfü'z-Zunûn is the relevant book itself. However, in the scientific articles, Ahmed b. Yahyâ et-Teftâzânî's Mecmûʿatü'l-Ulûm, Taşköprizâde Ahmed Efendi's (d. 968/1561) Miftâhu's-Saʿâde ve Misbâhu's-Siyâde fî Mevzûʿati'l-'Ulûm, Molla Lütfî's (d. 900/1494) Metalibü'l-İlahiyye fî Mevzûʿâti'l-ʿUlûm and Sadreddinzâde Eş-Şirvânî's Fevâʾidü'l-Hâkâniyye were used as sources. When we look at the sources cited by the author, it is understood that the main source of Keşfü'z-Zunûn is Taşköprizâde's Miftâhu's-Sa'âde. For example, in "İlmü'l-hat", information about the art of writing is summarized from Miftâhu's-Sa'âde (Kâtib Çelebi 1941: I/707-714). The main sources used in author biographies are İbnü'n-Nedîm's (d. 385/995 [?]) el-Fihrist, İbnü'l-Kıftî's (d. 646/1248) İhbârü'l-ʿUlemâ, Sübkî's Tabakat (d. 771/1370) and İbnü'l-Kıftî's (d. 646/1248) Ihbârü'l-ʿUlemâ. Hallikan's (d. 681/1282) Vefeyâtü'l-Aʿyân comes next.Keşfü'z-Zunûfollowing the alphabetical bibliography method; It carries innovations such as giving the death of the authors and the copyright dates of the works, quoting the beginning sentences of the works, and providing information about the chapters and chapters of a book. Although the work has flaws such as treating sciences and books in the same category, its material belonging to very different fields, and the deficiencies and errors in the sources referenced being quoted verbatim, these are insignificant compared to its scope and value in terms of the history of science (Kutluer 2002: 25/321-322). As a matter of fact, the Western world has Hippocrates, Euclid, Plato, Aristotle, Galenus, etc. The fact that it provides a detailed list of the works and branches of science in circulation in the 17th century, including the books of scholars translated into Arabic, makes Kashf al-Zunun a universal cultural value, an important source of the history of science and one of the masterpieces of Islamic civilization. Kashf al-Zunun gained acclaim in a short time after its publication and was embellished by various writers. Huseyin b.
