The best tafsîr is the explanation of the Qur'ân by the Qur'ân. The next best is the explanation of the Qur'ân by the Prophet Muhammad, who, as Shâfi'î explained, acted according to what he understood from the Qur'ân. Ako se u Kuranu i u suni proroka ne može ništa pronaći, tumač treba da se okrene izveštajima sahabe (Muhamedovih pratilaca). Ako se ne može ništa pronaći u Kuranu, kod sune i u izveštajima sahabe, tumač treba da se okrene sledbenicima posle Muhamedove smrti. Međutim, ništa se ne može uporediti sa objašnjenjem Kurana posredstvom Kurana i Muhamedovim objašnjenjem Kurana.
