Notlar A fragment of woven silk lampas. Syria, ca. AD1200-1300. Complex weave. Double warp, z-spun. Colours are green, yellow, red, black, buff. It is a striped piece with an eagle at the centre and possibly with gold discs at its head. Various coloured stripes are behind it and on either side are inscriptions woven into some of the stripes. Another stripe has a row of heart shaped motives. On the left side is an animal (dog?) with floral motives in the background. On the right is a lion with a human face, with a mane like a pointed star. Both the eagle and the animals are repeated in reverse above but the fabric has been cut so only the heads remain. The pieces has a number of holes. A lampus is a luxury weave having a background weft with supplementary weft laid on top to form the design. The motifs stand out from the backing. It was used a lot in furnishing as it is a heavier fabric. It was in use from around AD900 and had great popularity in the 16th century.
