Ms. 306 Origin: As appears in colophon on p.276, copied by ʻAbd al-Laṭīf ibn Shaykh Darvīsh Muḥammad al-Shirvānī, al-shahīr bi-Aflāṭūn, (Abdüllatif b. Derviş Mehmet eş-Şirvânî) with transcription completed in 971 [1563 or 4]. Former shelfmark: "344" inscribed in pencil on recto of opening leaf (p.1) ; "344 T. De M. [i.e. Tammaro De Marinis]" inscribed in pencil on verso of opening leaf (p.2). Binding: Pasteboards covered in red-brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; doublures in brown leather ; upper and lower covers carry tooled and gold-painted mandorla (filled with vegetal composition, compare Déroche OAi 8), pendants and cornerpieces, along with tooled border in a series of s-shaped stamps and fillets in gold ; upper and lower doublures carry diamond-shaped central ornament of gold-tooled interlace and border in gold fillets ; sewn in dull yellow, dark blue and dull pink thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in dull yellow and pink, damaged somewhat ; overall in somewhat poor condition with abrasion, staining, delamination of boards at corners, lifting of leather, envelope flap fully detached, etc. ; minor pieced repairs in dark brown leather ; housed in box for protection. Support: European laid paper of perhap a few types ; opening type with 9 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 25-28 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermark of anchor in circle (see p.8-9, 22, etc.) ; another type with 10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 27-32 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermarks of crossbow in circle (p.262, 268, etc.) alternating with crossed arrows (see p.258, 272, etc.) ; all quite sturdy, dull cream in color, and well-burnished. Decoration: Illuminated headpiece (ʻunwān / sarlawḥ) at opening on p.4 consisting of large (rising out of the well of turquoise and gold into which it is set and surmounted by vertical stalks (tīgh) in blue), scalloped semi-circular piece (dome) with a central cartouche (carrying the title "كتاب كلستان" in white on a black ground with red floral accents) surrounded by swirling floral vegetal motifs in gold, red, yellow, white, pink, and turquoise on fields of gold and lapis lazuli ; keywords and some vocalization rubricated, others chrysographed or in blue ink ; written area surrounded by frame consisting of gold band defined by black and blue fillets ; tailpiece consisting of floral accents in red and black ink flanking close (p.276). Script: Nastaʻlīq (talik) ; elegant hand ; serifless with effect of words descending to baseline, elongation of horizontal strokes, mainly closed counters, pointing in distinct dots. Layout: Written in 11 lines per page ; frame-ruled ; written area occasionally divided to two columns to set off verses. Collation: 17 IV(136), I (138), i ; almost exclusively quaternions ; p.38 left partially blank, perhaps for illustration never realized ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals (includes flyleaves). Colophon: "Scribal," in Arabic, reads "كتبه العبد المذنب عبد اللطيف المذنب بن شيخ درويش محمد الشروانى الشهير بافلاطون غفر الله لهما في سنه ٩٧١ م" Explicit: "در خاتمۀ کتاب گلستان تمام شد کتاب گلستان و الله الملک المستعان و بتوفیق باری عز اسمه درین جمله چنانکه عادت مؤلفان است از شعر متقدمان بطریق استعارت تلفیقی نرفت ... و اطلب لنفسک من خیر ترید به من بعد ذلک غفرانا لکاتبه" Incipit: "منت خدایرا عز و جل که طاعتش موجب قربتست ..."
