Ms. 88 Origin: As appears in scribal colophon on p.631, transcription completed ("wa-qad tamma taswīd al-kitāb...") Monday 17 Rabīʻ I 1135 [ca. 26 December 1722]. Preceding authorial colophon (also on p.631) indicates that composition was completed on the 27th night of Ramaḍān 850 [ca. 16 December 1446]. Accompanying materials: Slip with notes inserted between pp.126-127 (not paginated). Former shelfmark: British Museum, London "No. 120. Mirat al-usul." Binding: Pasteboards covered in marbled paper (blue, orange, yellow, mauve, etc.) with spine, fore-edge flap and edges/turn-ins in red leather, spine now covered with cloth and paper ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in laid paper ; traces of epigraphic stamp (large lozenge shape) reading "شفاء القلوب لقاء المحبوب" visible on lower cover where layers of paper have come away ; sewn in cream thread, two stations, often loose or missing ; worked endbands in cream thread, fair condition ; in quite poor condition with much abrasion, pest and water damage, lifting and losses of leather, delamination of boards, etc. ; repairs in cloth, leather, and paper ; extremely ill-fitting. Support: European laid paper of several types ; mainly with 6 laid lines per cm. (vertical) and chain lines spaced 28 mm. apart (horizontal), lightly burnished with crown, star, crescent watermark (compare Heawood 1132) ; another thinner type, smooth and well-burnished, with three hats watermark ; still another thin and fairly translucent type with crown and grapes or crown and beaded diamond watermark. Decoration: Illuminated headpiece (ʻunwān) at opening on p.12, consisting of rectangular piece surmounted by scalloped semi-circular piece (dome) set in a well of green and gold ; rectangular piece carries basmalah in a central cartouche defined by flanking accent pieces in gold, green and blue ; semi-circular piece (dome) carries crude floral vegetal design in green, white, blue, and red on a field of gold with outline in blue and vertical stalks (tīgh) in blue and red above ; written area of incipit page surrounded by gold frame ; keywords and section headings rubricated ; some overlining and textual dividers in the form of discs in red. Script: Naskh-nastaʻlīq (talik) ; sans serif ; slight effect of words descending to baseline ; mainly closed counters ; occasional elongated horizontal strokes and swooping tails ; kāf alif ligature forming closed loop. Layout: Written in 21 lines per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident).
