Ms. 545 Origin: As appears in colophon on p.173, copied by Muṣṭafá ibn Khalīl with transcription completed 13 Ramaḍān 974 [ca. 24 March 1567] in Ḥimṣ (Homs or Emesa). Accompanying materials: a. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas (pp.1-2) -- b. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda (pp.3-4). Former shelfmark: From interior of upper cover and spine label "IL 219" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip). Binding: Pasteboards covered in a once light-blue tinted laid paper (see envelope flap) with red-brown leather over spine, fore edge flap, and edges/turn-ins (framed binding) ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings (doublures) in yellow-tinted laid paper with simple symmetrical cross cut-out design over blue paper, hinges in dark brown to black leather ; upper and lower covers carry simple cut-out design over dark yellow or tan paper in a symmetrical floral ornament ; design continues on flap ; sewn in dark blue thread, two stations ; endbands gone ; overall in poor condition with significant abrasion (losses of pigment), lifting and losses of paper and leather, delamination of boards, staining, some spine slant (spine slightly cocked), etc. Support: European laid paper with 8-9 laid lines per cm. (vertical), single chain lines spaced 27-30 mm. apart (horizontal), anchor in circle watermark with six-pointed star above (roughly 65 mm. tall, see p.6, 39, etc.) ; countermarks include "S R" with trefoil above (see p.8, 15, etc.) and "P B" with trefoil above (see p.35, possibly different paper though measurements very similar) ; sized and burnished though not excessively smooth, sturdy and thick though crisp, dingy cream color. Decoration: Keywords and text being commented upon rubricated (text otherwise executed in brown ink) ; textual dividers in the form of red inverted commas. Script: Naskh ; bold, compact (letters spaced very close together) Syrian hand in a medium line ; virtually serifless (though occasional right-sloping head-serifs irregularly appear) with slight effect of tilt to the right, exaggerated thickness and some elongation of horizontal strokes, descenders somewhat flattened, mainly closed counters, pointing in strokes rather than distinct dots, free assimilation of letters (especially wāw with following lām, etc.), final nūn of من reversed (re-curved), yāʼ of في often mardūdah, sweeping shaqq on kāf (even final), occasional hāʼ looking like two inverted commas one atop the other. Layout: Written in 20 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation : V (10), V+1 (21), 6 V(81), III (87) ; chiefly quinions ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes inserts and mistakenly skips over two pages between pp.99-100). Colophon: "Scribal," triangular, reads "تم الكتاب بعون الملك الوهاب وهو حسبي واليه المآب على يد اضعف العباد الراجي رحمة ربه الجليل مصطفى بن خليل في نهار الاثنين المبارك يوم ثالث عشر من رمضان المبارك من شهور سنة ۹۷۴ في مدينة حمص حرصها الله تعالى من الخلافة والمحنة ... والحمد لله رب العالمين" Explicit: "اذا صبر في هذين القسمين حتى قتل صار شهيدا لانه يكون بادلا نفسه لاعزاز الدين واقامة حق الشرع" Incipit: "الحمد لله الذي جعل الاصول شرعه منارا اي منار وافاض على من اختار [اختاره] انوار كشف الاسرار ... وبعد فيقول الفقير الى الله الغني عبد الرحمن بن ابي بكر بن العيني ... لما رأيت المختصر المسمى بالمنار في اصول الفقه للامام العلامة حافظ الملة والدين ابي البركات النسفي ... كتابا لم ير مثله في الاصول وما كتب عليه من الشروح ... اردت ان الخص عليه شرحا سالكا طريق الاختصار ..."
