Ms. 655 Origin: Appears to lack dated colophon ; paper and hand would suggest late 14th or 15th century. Accompanying materials: a. Two inventory cataloguing slips in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas -- b. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda. Former shelfmark: From inner front cover, "IL 278" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip). Binding: Pasteboards covered in now dull yellow paper with brown leather over spine, fore edge flap, and fore edge of upper board ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in untinted laid paper ; sewn in blue thread, two stations ; overall in quite poor condition with much abrasion, delamination and losses to boards (recycled manuscript 'waste' used in boards exposed), fully detached at spine, etc. ; housed in box for protection. Support: non-European (likely Arab) laid paper with roughly 8 laid lines per cm. (horizontal) and chain lines (vertical) grouped in threes with 10 mm. between chains and 52 mm. between groups ; fairly thick, now quite soft, well-burnished. Decoration: Keywords and headings rubricated. Script: Naskh ; large 'Syrian' or Egyptian hand ; mainly serifless and fairly vertical (without inclination to left or right) with curvilinear descenders, pointing in distinct dots, shaqq of kāf typically represented by a wavy horizontal stroke seated above the ascender, alif of قال sweeping to the right, etc. Layout: Written mainly in 15 lines per page ; pp.229 and 230 written in a different hand, in 16 lines per page. Collation: V-3 (7), V-2 (15), V-2 (23), 10 V(123) ; missing leaves include leaves 1-3 of the first quire, leaves 5-6 of the second, and 5-6 of the third quire ; quire numbering in the form of full words appearing in the upper outer corner of the recto of the opening leaf of each quire (see p. 15, 31, 67, 87, 107, 147, 167, 187, 207 and 227) ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
