Notlar About: Fine copy of Sulayman al-Jamal's (d.1789 or 90) commentary, itself an abridgment of the renowned commentary by al-Fāsī (d.1698), on al-Jazūlī's (d.1465) celebrated collection of prayers for the Prophet, Dalāʼil al-khayrāt. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 526 Origin: As appears in colophon on p.261, copied by ʻAbd al-Qādir al-Ḥabbāl with transcription completed 5 Dhū al-Qaʻdah 1264 [ca. 3 October 1848]. As appears in preceding authorial colophon on p.261 composition completed 16 Shaʻbān 1191 [ca. 19 September 1777]. Accompanying materials: a. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda (pp.1-2) -- b. Inventory cataloguing slip in card file. Former shelfmark: From inner front cover and fore edge flap label, "IL 365a" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip). Binding: Pasteboards covered in printed paper (leaf-like forms in green, white, and black) with black leather over spine and fore edge flap ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in untinted paper ; sewn in white thread, six stations ; worked chevron endbands in cream and black, fairly good condition ; overall in poor condition with significant abrasion, lifting and losses of leather (especially at fore edge flap), paper and pasteboard, staining, detaching at spine, etc. ; housed in box for protection. Support: European laid paper with 10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 28 mm. apart (horizontal), and three crescents watermark (72 mm. long, perpendicular to chains, see p.6, 112, 113, etc.) ; quite sturdy though fairly transluscent, only lightly sized and burnished if so. Decoration: Keywords and text being commented upon rubricated ; several diagrams, mainly in red and black including diagram accompanying discussion of the Prophet's names (p.50), depictions of the rawḍah (p.86, 89, 90), sandal of the Prophet (p.145, 146), depiction of Jannah, al-Ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm and al-Ṣirāṭ al-muʻwajj (p.221), and depiction of the head of a sheep (raʼs kharūf) as seen and described by al-Shaʻrānī (p.260). Script: Naskh ; angular Egyptian [?] hand ; virtually serifless with effect of tilt to the right and of words descending to baseline (occasionally more exaggerated), some sweeping descenders, freely ligatured, pointing in strokes rather than distinct dots, etc. Layout: Written in 27 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: 13 V(130) ; exclusively quinions ; quire numbering in the form of Hindu-Arabic numerals under kāf mabsūṭah in the upper outer corner of the opening recto of each quire (in black ink and pencil) ; p.144 left partially blank to accommodate full page depiction of the Prophet's sandal on the following leaf ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes insert).
