یادداشت‌ها Middle East, Metalwork. Bowl with fitted lid, brass with silver inlay, with engraved decoration, signed by Master Muhammad, son of al-Hajj `Ali, Mamluk Egypt or Syria, 1500-1550
متن نمونه 3amal al-ra<'>iis mu7ammad ibn al-Haajj 3alii / ibn al-mu3allim khiDr al-naqqaash juu al-maghfirah Translation The work of al-Ra'is Muhammad son of al-Hajj 'Ali son of al-Mu'allim Khidr al-Naqqash, who seeks forgiveness. Note The bowl is the work of a metalworker called Muhammad who bears the title al-ra'is , which means "captain" or "head". His father 'Ali had made the pilgrimage to Mecca, hence his title of al-hajj . His grandfather, Khidr, bears the title al-mu'allim , "master, sc. of a craft". The last part of the name is a nisbah , or "epithet", al-naqqash , which was the name given to a craftsman who decorated things, such as a painter or the metalworker who decorated this lidded bowl. It is not clear who it refers to. It may have been the nisbah of the grandfather, al-Mu'allim Khidr, or of al-Ra'is Muhammad himself, or both.
