Notes
I had the privilege of approaching this wonderful man, whom Turkey had the honor and happiness to meet at a most tragic moment in its history, several times, in Istanbul, Ankara, and in the house he built on stilts in Yalova for the purpose of seclusion and rest. It can be guessed what kind of memories I have preserved from these reflections, some of which are short enough to be considered fleeting and some of which are long. As I write these lines, I feel again the excitement that gripped us the day we met Atatürk for the last time: We were in Çankaya. Ataturk, who perhaps felt that he was sick, weak, and dangerously afflicted, wanted to tell us a little more about himself, knowing that our support was close.
