The book, with the help of God Almighty, [Divan-ı Fuzulî] “A light that is insulting to Fuzuli, that is, you are cold, with news without seeing the Afghanilah in your home, or touching it with a whisper...Kawthar and Khor Isa are a target, and he is tormented by torment, because he has left Boyur, and he has not waited for any preacher.”, Collation: III+1-1 [?] (6), 2 IV(22), 3 I(28), II (32), 7 IV(88), III (94), IV (102), III (108), II (112), IV (120), II (124), III (130); chiefly quaternions ; middle of the quire marks in the form of 6 (i.e. numerical five in the ghubār system or “khamsah ghubārīyah”) appear throughout; oblique catchwords on the verso of each leaf; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during cataloguing., Layout: Distinct layout for each of the two main sections, though both written chiefly in 14 lines per page with written area divided into two columns (apart for the preface to Fuzulî's divan); both frame-ruled., Script: Nastaʻlīq (talik) ; two main hands ; opening section (opening through p.80) in an elegant hand in a delicate line, spacious and characteristically serifless with gentle effect of words descending to baseline, elongation and contrasting thickness of horizontal strokes, pointing in distinct dots, point of final or free-standing nūn often assimilated with bowl; final section (from p.84 to close of codex) in a another elegant hand in a medium line, more compactly filling the line and characteristically serifless with effect of words descending to baseline, elongation and contrasting thickness of horizontal strokes, pointing in distinct or conjoined dots, point of final nūn often seated just above or down in tall bowl with somewhat narrow opening., Decoration: At opening of first section (p.2), illuminated double-page opening (ʻunwān / sarlawḥ), right-hand page with four lines written on the diagonal surrounded by a blue frame in a field of gold with floral decorations in white, blue, orange, etc. (now damaged with loss of pigment) surrounded by an elaborate border consisting of wide bands of vegetable decoration outlined by bands of blue and gold; facing / left-hand page with text of written area set off by gold cloud-bands with floral accents in white, orange and light blue; written area throughout opening section surrounded by frame of gold bands set off by white and blue fillets; borders in silhouette painting accent two openings (see pp.20-21, 36-37); at close of opening section on pp.78-79, offset of a painting of figures on horseback, with renderings of horses plainly visible ; some headings and keywords of final section rubricated, otherwise without decorative elements., Support: non-European (perhaps Persian) laid paper of mainly two types, each section in a distinct main type; main type of opening section (through p.80) with roughly 7 lines laid per cm. (mainly vertical but occasionally horizontal and indistinct) and possibly grouped chain lines (though quite clear), coarse / cloudy formation, quite sturdy though translucent, cream in color, well-burnished; repair to opening leaf in European laid paper; breakthrough at frames in opening section., Binding: Pasteboards covered in red-brown (stamped areas and spine) and black (bordering stamped areas) leathers; Type II binding (with flap); likely two-piece binding (seam of overlapping flanges visible at spine) ; doubles in brown leather; upper and lower covers block-stamped, black-and-and gold-painted (large panel stamp repeated twice with central seam visible) with design of mandorla (compare Déroche class. NSd 10), pendants, upper and lower rectangular pieces with lozenges and wide border overlaid with vegetable composition filling panel; design continues on envelope flap ; sewn in dark blue to black thread, two stations, failing in some areas; worked chevron endbands in brown and yellow, tailband lost, losses of thread to headband with leather core exposed; overall in poor condition with lower cover fully detached (exposing textile spine lining), upper joint splitting, abrasion and accretions, etc. ; repairs to joints at spine and to board edges in red leather; housed in box for protection., Former shelfmark: "244 T. De M. [i.e. Tammaro De Marinis]" inscribed in pencil on 'title page' (p.1)., Accompanying materials: Conservation report with description and condition from Library Preservation and Conservation (signed by Shannon Zachary and dated 22 February 2010)., Origin: Both sections lack dated colophon. For opening, earlier section, decoration, hand, paper, etc. suggest 16th century; similarly, paper, hand, etc. of final, later section suggest late 16th or early 17th century.
