The greatest danger that a Muslim faces is that which threatens his moral existence, i.e. that which threatens his faith. That is why apostasy from religion - disbelief after Islam - was the greatest danger to Muslim society, and the greatest thing plotted by its enemies was to seduce its children from their religion by force and weapons or by cunning and trickery. Discussions differed among scholars about apostasy and the apostate, and his punishment in Islamic law. Some said that the Qur’an would never be exposed to this crime in its verses. Others said that there was only one hadith about the punishment of apostasy, and others tried to downplay the crime and his step. This difference in opinions is what prompted Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi to prepare this study in which he strives to clarify the truth in these matters in which the scholars of the nation have confused truth with falsehood, relying on the texts of the Qur’an and the Sahih Sunnah, the understanding of the Companions, and the sayings of the scholars of the nation. It became clear to him that the Qur’an did not completely neglect the crime of apostasy or its punishment, as the claimants claimed, and that the Sunnah did not contain a single hadith about the punishment of apostasy, but rather a number of hadiths. He also laid out the danger of apostasy for society, and that it could divide it and tear it apart, and throw it into blind strife, or even into a civil war in which people are killed, countries are destroyed, and everything is destroyed. There has been much talk about apostasy and the apostate, and his punishment in Islamic law, and those who do good and those who do not enter into the battle. Some said: The Qur’an has never been subjected to this crime in any of its verses. Others said: There is only one hadith mentioned in the punishment of apostates, which is: “Whoever does good and who does not do good” entered the battle. "He changed his religion, kill him." They tried to downplay this crime and its danger to society, and they did not distinguish between going private and openly, nor between the preacher and the non-preacher, nor between the types of apostasy. In the face of this debate and conflicting opinions between those who approve of the punishment for apostasy and those who deny it, this study came to reveal the true dimensions of apostasy, and delve into its merits. -- Includes bibliographic references.
