The strange and the wonderful in the lands of Islam [exhibition], Paris, Musée du Louvre, April 23-July 23, 2001, under the direction. by Marthe Bernus Taylor and Cécile Jail. Paris, Meeting of National Museums, 2001, p. 235, no. 163. J.C. Coulon, Magic in the land of Islam in the Middle Ages, (CTHS History Collection, 61), Editions of the Committee of Historical and Scientific Works, 2017. S. Makariou, The Appearance of the Heavens; astronomy and astrology in Islamic lands. Paris, 1998 (Exhibition file of the Department of Oriental Antiquities at the Louvre Museum), no. 30. Very beautiful Persian neskhi, vocalized, from the year 990 AH [1582], written in gold frames. Neither the title nor the name of the author are indicated in the preface to this book; the title is only read at the top of its text; the name of Seyyid Mohammed ibn Emir Hasan is only found at the end of the second treatise which is contained in the manuscript (folio 124 verso), and at the very end of the volume. The Mataliʿ el-sáʿadet or Metaliʿü'l-saadet was translated from an original written in Arabic, at the request of Sultan Murad Han III (982-1003 AH = 1574-1595) [folio 7 recto], of whom we find a beautiful portrait on folio 8 verso. It begins with the astrological description of the twelve signs of the zodiac; there we find (folios 32-33) a table representing the situations of men classified according to the influence of the planets which determine them and the conjunctions of the planets in the signs of the zodiac (folio 33 verso); astronomical and astrological tables (folio 38 recto); a table (folio 65 verso) indicating the character of women according to their physical advantages; a اختلاج نامه, in the form of a table (folio 66 recto); a تعبير نامه, or key to dreams, also arranged in the form of a table (folio 66 verso); the phases of the moon (folio 69 recto); the circles which are used in the divination game known as غالب و مغلوب (folios 70-71); the figure of the world distributed around the Kaʿba (folio 74 verso); a fanciful image of the tomb of Mohammed (folio 75 recto); a series of paintings (folio 75 verso), copied from the illustrations of a Persian ʿAǧaïb el-makhloukat, after which comes the قرعۀ جعفریّه, or treatise on divination according to trinomials of letters of the Arabic alphabet, in prose and in verse, attributed to the alid imam Ğaʿfer el-Sadik, with the means of using it (folio 92 recto). This pamphlet is written in prose and verse; there is no doubt that it is due to the same author as the Mataliʿ el-saʿadet; following it we find a treatise on divination فال (folio 125 recto) by the figures of geomancy, the formulas of this magical science being attributed to the various prophets, by the same author; a game of catch by requests and answers (folio 134 verso). The date of the composition of the treatise on spells with its appendices is indicated by two chronograms (folios 140 verso, 141 recto), which both give the date of the year 990 AH (1582). The first pages of this manuscript (folios 2-4) contain a detailed, although incomplete, table of contents; it was copied for Fatma Sultane, daughter of Sultan Murad III (folio 5 recto); it is illustrated with very beautiful paintings, of a much higher quality than those usually found in Turkish books. They are clearly the work of a famous artist, named Osman. Paris: National Library, 1932-1933.
