A title that we read at the top of the volume is apocryphal. The work begins with a series of traditions in which Muhammad spoke of horses; then comes a rhyming poem in ri, which was said to have been recited by an unknown person before Sultan Salâḥ al-Dîn (Saladin) Yoûsof ibn Aiyoûb. In this piece, each verse of which is accompanied by a commentary, the author describes the marks and qualities of a good horse. On fol. 14 v° is the figure of a black horse, accompanied by the names of all the parts of the animal; on fol. 18, the representation of a mare and her foal; on fol. 19, the figure of a white horse which appears to be climbing a steep hill; on fol. 20, the figure of the Ḥaïzoûm (حيزوم), a hippogriff which served as a mount for the angel Gabriel. Next comes an anatomical description of the horse, accompanied by three figures, one of which is a very rudimentary and very incorrect representation of a skeleton; then, a treatise on hippatrics in verse whose rhyme is ri. Each verse is followed by a commentary. This poem contains the names of the defects and diseases of horses and instructions on training, on the treatment of diseases, on the defensive weapons and the offensive weapons of the rider, on harness and on fighting. This work, several passages of which are in rhymed prose, appears to have been composed in Egypt, towards the end of the 15th century. Ms. dated 1180 A.H. (1670 A.D.).
