Notes
A precious antique copy, identical to the original from which it was copied. It is divided into four parts in imitation of the hadith parts, and it appears that the copyist transmitted it and arranged it as he found it. It is the narration of Abu Hayyan Ali bin Muhammad al-Tawhidi al-Baghdadi on the authority of Abu Hamid al-Qadi and Abu Mansur ibn al-Marzban the writer. This narration is the same narration that appears in the two copies of the Treasury of al-Qarawiyyin in Fez [No. 647, 1526] of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq’s letter and Ali’s answer to him and an explanation of some of the words in the letter, and the same is true in the Treasury copy. Al-Hasaniyah in Rabat [No.: 5915], transmitted by Ibn Arabi in his lecture on the righteous and the companionship of the good [Cairo 1315 AH 2/77]. Ibn Arabi added a chapter to it explaining the strangeness of its language. All of these copies differ greatly from our copy, even though the text of the treatise is similar in all copies. The text in it was written in dark, viscous black ink, and the headings of the paragraphs, some of the sentences, words, and chapter headings, and some comments, were written in red ink, on Kaghad. Levantine Arabic made by Shami Al-Najjar, thick-bodied. On folio 68b the following text appears, written in the beautiful, glorious Diwani script: ((In the drawing of the Most High Mawlawi al-Khawajki al-Asili al-Ariqi and the chief Makhdoumi al-Zayni al-Khawaja Zain al-Din Abi Bakr Fartna, a relative of Ibn al-Sawh. May God treat him with hidden kindness in this world and the hereafter and help him to do good deeds and abandon evil deeds and seal well for him and for all Muslims)), and in the copy it is owned by the name of Ahmed bin Abdullah Agha al-Qassab, dated in Rabi’ al-Thani in the year 1273 AH. It appears that Khawaja Zain al-Din Abu Bakr was one of the wealthy merchants during the days of the Mamluk Sultan Qaitbay. Ibn Iyas [Bada’i al-Zuhur fi Waqi’a al-Dhur] uses the term “Khawaja” for Aroman merchants and non-Egyptian strangers.
