| Sample Text | A famous example of Arabic romance poetry is the work of Leyla and Majnun, which originates from the Umayyad era in the seventh century. It is a tragic story of immortal love, much like the later drama Romeo and Juliet, which is said to have been inspired to some extent by the Latin version of Laila and Majnun. Another medieval Arabic love story was the Hadith Bayadva Riyadh (The Tale of Bayad and Riyadh) an Arabic love story from Andalusia written in the thirteenth century. The main protagonists of the story are Bayad, the son of a merchant and a foreigner from Damascus, and Riyad, a well-educated girl at the court of the nameless Hajib of Andalusia (vizier or minister) whose also nameless daughter, accompanied by Riyad, represents a noblewoman. The Story of Bayad and Riyadh is believed to be the only illustrated manuscript known to have survived to this day after more than eight centuries of Muslim and Arab presence in Spain. |
