There are many Arabic loanwords in Serbian, brought mainly through the Ottoman Turkish language. Examples of these words are generally accepted in other Western languages today: admiral, alchemy, algorithm, alkaline, almanac, arsenal, banana, carat, cipher, coffee, jasmine, lemon, magazine, mattress, sherbet, sofa, sugar, and many others. Other languages, such as Maltese and Kinubi, arose from Arabic and did not just borrow individual words and grammatical rules.
