| Sample Text | Traditional Islamic scholars have recognized two main branches within Sufi practice and use this as a key to distinguishing the methods of various teachers and lines of discipleship. On the one hand, there is a sequence from signs to signifiers (or from works to creators). In this branch the seeker begins to cleanse the lower being of all harmful influences that stand in the way of recognizing all creation as God's work as God's active self-revelation or theophany. Such is the method of Imam al-Ghazali and most Sufi orders. On the other hand, there is a sequence from the signifier to its signs, from the creator to his works. In that branch, the seeker experiences the divine attraction (jadba) and can enter the order with a view to the ultimate point, the immediate understanding of the divine presence towards which all spiritual striving is directed. |
