| Sample Text | Almost all major Sufi orders maintain a chain of transmission (silsila) back to Muhammad through his cousin and son-in-law Ali. The Naqshbandi order is a notable exception to this rule as it traces the origin of its teachings to Muhammad and the first Islamic caliph, Abu Bakr. Over time, various styles of Sufi practice and tradition have developed, reflecting the reflection of various teachers and the accumulated cultural wisdom of the orders. Usually all of them were concerned with understanding the subtle teachings (gnosis), learning how to purify the heart from base motives, loving God and approaching God through a well-described hierarchy of stable spiritual stations (makamat) and more unstable spiritual states (ahval). |
