My master Sheikh Imam said... Abu Muhammad... bin Abi Jamrah... Praise be to God who has opened the darkness of the ignorance of hearts... As for what is included in what we have entrusted to the program of the book, which we called the collection of the end in the beginning of goodness and its end, an indication of the multiplication of the benefits of its hadiths, and the generalization of its virtues, and I was determined to explain them... so I decided to make each of those hadiths that were collected by itself the status of a chapter... and I called the book the joy of souls and their sweetening of knowledge of what is in them. And it has... ... The sixth is that the shepherd looks to his flock for the private and public benefit... What supports this is his saying, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, “Start with yourself, then with those you support,” and this is also obligatory in public and private care. God is the Helper.

يقول كاتب هذه الأحرف عبد الرحمن بن محمد الثعالبي لطف الله به حبست هذا الكتاب ... ابن أبي جمرة رحمه الله المقتضب هذا على ظهر أول ورقة منه على طلبة العلم ينتفعون به ... مؤبدا لوجه الله الكريم وراجيا ثوابه العظيم الى أن يرث الله الأرض ومن عليها وهو خير الوراثين ويكون تصرف الطلبة ... في غيره مما يبديه من الكتب المحبسة على ... محمد وفقه الله لطاعته وجعله من أهل ولايته وليس ... ولا غيره نظر عليه لا يخرج من يده بوجه وهو مقدم في الانتفاع على غيره وكتب في ... ذي قعدة من عام اثنين وأربعين وثمانمائة ... وجعلناه بجامع الزيتونة فإن جعل الله سبحانه لنا ذرية ... اهلية للنظر فهم مقدمون على من سواهم وكذا سائر ما جعلته حبسا بجامع الزيتونة.
