Notes XIX. After the Naqshbandi order came to the Caucasus at the beginning of the 19th century, the Caucasian peoples who were familiar with the Sufi culture easily adopted this new sect. The first guide in the Caucasus of the Khalidiyya branch of Naqshbandiyyah, which spread rapidly in Azerbaijan and Dagestan, was Ismail Sirajeddin Shirvani Kürdemiri, one of the caliphs of Mevlana Khalid al-Baghdadi. As a result of his guidance activities in Azerbaijan (Shirvan) and Dagestan, many Sufis and guides were trained in the region. After İsmail Kürdemirî migrated to Anatolia, his disciples continued Naqshbandiyya in the Caucasus. In later periods, as a result of the activities of Kürdemirî's students, some Naqshbandi branches emerged in the region. Some of these branches actively participated in the struggles against the Russians and gave a Sufi character to the Muridism movement. In this study, we will discuss the life of İsmail Kürdemirî and try to introduce the Naqshbandi branches and their representatives that emerged in Azerbaijan and Dagestan.
