Notes
(Hz.) Mary is accepted as Theotokos, "Mother of God" in Christianity and is mentioned as "Virgin Mary" in her maternal capacity. Since she is the mother of Jesus, the head of the Church, she is also considered the mother of the Church. Virgin Mary also has the feature of being spotless/sinless and permanently/eternally virgin. Because of these characteristics, Christians in general have made it a tradition to celebrate many events related to his life, from his birth to his death, as "holidays". The death of the Virgin Mary, celebrated on August 15, is one of them. The death of the Virgin Mary, under the name "Koimesis", became the name of Christian holy places and was included in the icons in these places. Due to its importance, the death of the Virgin Mary is discussed from an iconographic perspective in this article. In the article where the Virgin Mary's Death Icon (Koimesis) is mentioned, firstly, brief information is given about the concepts of Icon, Death and Mary, and then the place and importance of icons and the Virgin Mary in Christianity are mentioned in general terms. Then, the iconographic reflection of the death of the Virgin Mary was discussed from the perspective of History of Religions.
