Notes
Idris is a prophet about whom the Holy Quran provides brief information. Similarly, Enoh, one of the people with whom he was identified based on his elevation to a supreme place, is a person about whom the Bible provides very little information. For this reason, many comments have been made about who Idris is and the origin of his name. Within the framework of the search for an origin, attempts to identify him with Thot, Hermes and Mercury, the mystical and mythological figures of the surrounding cultures, made Idris's identity more closed. The main claim of this article is that the context of revelation of the verses about Prophet Idris contains some guidance in determining who he is. It is understood that his name and characteristics mentioned in the verses sent down before the migration of the first Muslims to Abyssinia have a counterpart in the Abyssinian society. In the article, it has been tried to show that the name and characteristics of Idris, as mentioned in the Quran, are an approval for the acceptance in the Abyssinian society, but at the same time a rejection of those who abstract him from these characteristics.
