The ideas of the materialist German philosopher Louis Boucher (1824-1899), who was expelled from the pulpit because of his work, had an impact in Europe in the 19th century. The translation into Turkish of Matter and Force, which is the source of the ideas defended by Abdullah Cevdet (1869-1931) and Baha Tevfik (1881-1914), belongs to Louis Boucher. Boucher's ideas about the soul, brain, contemplation and conscience played a role in the defense of naturalist, materialist and positivist ideas in Turkey. The ideas that came through this work, limiting knowledge and reality to objectivity and the empirical world, led to the denial of God, revelation, prophethood and the soul. These discussions, which correspond to the times when political and cultural changes took place in Turkey, had reflections on the masses as well as the intellectuals. İsmail Fenni Ertuğrul, (1855-1946) Bediüzzaman Said Nursi (1876-1960) and other contemporaries rejected the aspects of these ideas that contradicted the messages brought by the Quran. Our study aims to reveal the thoughts of these two thinkers, who discussed the concepts of matter, life, human, spirit and conscience, which were discussed by atheist and materialist thinkers in this period, on the basis of the establishment and construction of religious belief. According to Said Nursi, "life turns everything into a thing and a thing into the possession of all things. Life is the reason for the discovery of existence. It transforms a partial thing into a universal and universal. It also causes the universal to be compressed into a partial and insignificant... İsmail Fenni also points out that matter does not have the power and possibility to reveal life and says, "matter is inert, carbon, hydrogen, etc. One by one, they can never show the power to reveal life. He opposed the explanation of spirit and life in terms of matter with the words "There is a (divine) power that brings them together in a miraculous way." In our study, we will try to explain the above concepts in a comparative way as much as possible.
