Notes
It can be said that there is a parallelism between the development of Muslims in political, economic and social fields from the early periods in Islamic civilization and their increasing interest in fine arts and especially in the art of music. After the Umayyad (41-132/661-750 AD) period, when the number of people professionally interested in music increased and famous musicians began to emerge, there was a significant increase in the number of copyrighted works on the theoretical and practical aspects of the science of music, especially during the ʿAbbāsī period (132-656/750-1258 AD). These developments in music continued during the Fāṭımī period (297-567/909-1171 AD). However, it can be thought that the music of the Fāṭımīs, who were on the stage of history in the same period as the ʿAbbāsīs, where many famous musicians were trained and important developments took place in terms of musical art, were overshadowed by the ʿAbbāsīs. When we look at the works written on the historical development of music in Islamic civilization in general, we see that they include information about the musical culture and famous musicians of each period, starting from the Age of Ignorance, in a chronological classification. However, it is understood that the musical culture of the Fāṭimī State period, which was established in North Africa in the 10th century when the ʿAbbāsī State began to weaken and made a great impact in the Islamic world by taking over Egypt in a short time and left deep traces in the political, religious, cultural and social life during the three centuries they remained on the stage of history, is not mentioned enough in the works on the history of music. In our literature review, no comprehensive study on the musical culture of the Fāṭımīs could be identified. In our opinion, the main reason for this is that the Fāṭımīs remained in the background because they emerged in a period when the ʿAbbāsīs still existed as the most powerful state of the Islamic world, and the resources regarding the music of the Fāṭımīs period were inadequate or limited information was found scattered in different sources. In this study, first of all, the situation of the Fāṭımīs period in fields such as architecture, fine arts and literature will be briefly discussed. Then, with the aim of shedding light on the musical culture of the period, evaluations will be made in the light of the information we can find about the place of music in the Fatimid palace and the protection of musicians, the use of music in religious ceremonies, the situation of music in social life, the scientific studies carried out on music during the Fāṭimī period, and the instruments used by musicians of that period. The main purpose of this study is to try to reveal the relationship between the Fāṭımīs and musical art in the history of Islamic civilization and thus to raise awareness for other academic studies that can be done by making a contribution to filling the gap about the Fāṭımīs period in terms of musical history. It can be said that there is a parallelism between the political, economic and social development of Muslims and their increasing interest in fine arts, especially music, since the early periods of Islamic civilization. After the Umayyad period (r. 41-132/661-750), which saw an increase in the number of people professionally interested in music and the emergence of famous musicians, there was a marked increase in the number of works written about the theoretical and practical aspects of music during the ʿAbbāsid period (r. 132-656/750-1258). This development in music continued during the Fāṭimid period. While many famous musicians emerged and significant developments in music took place during the ʿAbbāsids, it can be assumed that the music of the Fāṭimids (r. 297-567/909-1171), who lived at the same time as the ʿAbbāsids and left a deep mark on political, religious, cultural, and social life during their three centuries in history, was overshadowed by the ʿAbbāsids. Looking at the works written about the historical development of music in Islamic civilization, we find that they provide information about musical culture and famous musicians of each period, starting with the pre-Islamic period with a chronological division. It goes without saying, however, that the musical culture of the Fāṭimid period, which was centered in North Africa and caused a great stir in the Islamic world due to the rapid conquest of Egypt when the Abbasid state began to weaken in the 10th century, has not been sufficiently mentioned in works on music history. In our literature search, we did not find any comprehensive study on the musical culture of the Fāṭimids. The main reasons for this, in our opinion, are that the Fāṭimids emerged at a time when the ʿAbbāsids were still the most powerful state in the Islamic world, and that sources on the music of the Fatimid period are insufficient or scattered with little information in various sources. This study will first briefly discuss the state of the Fāṭimid period in the fields of architecture, fine arts, and literature. Then, in order to shed light on the musical culture of the period, the place of music in the Fatimid court and the patronage of musicians, the use of music in religious ceremonies, the status of music in social life, the works on music in the Fāṭimid period, and the instruments used by musicians at that time will be evaluated in the light of the information we have been able to identify. The main purpose of this study is to try to reveal the relationship of the Fāṭimids with the art of music in the history of Islamic civilization and thus to contribute to the gap in the history of music in terms of the Fāṭimid period and to raise awareness for other academic studies.
