Notes
In this study, Mollâ Câmî and the metaphysical explanations in his annotations are discussed. These works are grammar texts that took a widespread place in Ottoman madrasah education. In these works, the construction of sentences, as a grammatical issue, is handled as a problem of existence and is treated with metaphysical concepts such as substance, accident, matter, form, proximate cause, remote cause. The authors of these works based the analysis of the sentences on the version of the four causes theory applied by Aristotle in physics, accepted by the theologians. Thus, Mollâ Câmî (d. 898/1492) and his commentators adopted a different approach and terminology than the grammarians before them. In this respect, we need to consider them as a separate school in terms of the history of syntax.
