Notes
The subject of this study is to evaluate the problem of the origin of the science of Sufism, which has been discussed by some Islamic scholars and orientalists, in the context of Ma'rûf el-Kerhî. Some orientalists, such as Reynold A. Nicholson, saw the Islamic religion as inadequate in the face of the complexity of Sufism and claimed that this branch of science was inspired by different religions and traditions such as Christian Gnosticism, Buddhism, Persian and Indian. Some thinkers have discussed the origin of the science of Sufism within the framework of Shiism. For example, some names within the Sunni wing, such as Takıyüddin İbn Taymiyye, and figures such as Abdülhüseyin Zerrînkûb and Kâmil Mustafa al-Şeybî, who adopted the Shiite doctrine, made some opinions on the possibility of meeting Mar'rûf el-Kerhî and İmam Ali Rıza. Because Ma'ruf's family belonged to a different religion and he became a Muslim from Imam Ali er-Rıza, which brought him to the center of these discussions. The aim of the study is to evaluate the views expressed on the origin of Sufism, specifically Ma'rûf, and to examine them in the light of early and classical period Sufi literature. The scope of the study is limited to the fragments about Ma'rûf reported in the early and classical period Sufi literature and the arguments of some Islamic scholars and orientalists on the subject.
