Mâtürîdî (d. 333/944) distinguished tafsir from interpretation in the introduction of his work called Te'vîlâtü'l-Kur'an. Accordingly, tafsir is the work of the companions. Because they witnessed the revelation, they understood the meaning of the verses. For this reason, their narrations regarding the verses are binding. Despite this, Maturidi sometimes expressed his opinion on more than two hundred issues, despite the narrations of his companions, and sometimes rejected the news in question. This leads to the conclusion that it contradicts itself in the first place. Our study focuses on the question of whether it contradicts itself or whether this distinction has a different purpose. In the first part, Māturīdī's definition of companions and the number of news coming from them were emphasized. In the second part, the reasons why Maturidi gave his opinion despite the news in question or rejected them are discussed. In the last section, the factors that led it to the distinction of tafsirta'wil are discussed. As a result, it is seen that Mâturîdî did not contradict himself and evaluated the narrations of the companions who did not meet the conditions of exegesis as interpretation. In addition, this distinction also says that there is no difference between the statement of the companions who were not revealed about the verse and the statement of the jurist.
