Notes
In the marketing literature, the concept of market segmentation strategies was first used by Wendell R. Smith (1956). In fact, when looked carefully, it is possible to see these strategies in Ibn Khaldun's work. Ibn Khaldun expressed these strategies approximately 650 years ago, but since he did not conceptualize them, this situation did not receive the attention it deserved. The aim of this study is to reveal that the market segmentation strategies mentioned in the marketing literature were actually mentioned in Ibn Khaldun's work Muqaddimah many years ago and to contribute to the work receiving the attention it deserves. To achieve this goal, in the first part, market segmentation strategies in the marketing literature are determined and some of them are explained, in the second part, statements about market segmentation strategies in Ibn Khaldun's work called Muqaddimah are included, and in the third part, a comparison is made and the conclusion is reached. In his work, Ibn Khaldun divided the world into two main parts, north and south, and then divided the northern part into seven climatic zones. Accordingly, Ibn Khaldun stated that those living in the first, second, sixth and seventh regions had different needs than those living in the third, fourth and fifth regions. Ibn Khaldun says about the first group: "Their structures are made of mud and reeds. They obtain their food from millet and grass. Their clothes are made of tree leaves or unprocessed leather." and for the second group, "The people of the regions in question are more complete. Because the weather they live in is normal. Therefore, you find them extremely normal. You find them more adequate in their dwellings, clothing, food and drink, occupations and arts." He used the expressions. These statements clearly show that people living in different regions have different needs due to climatic conditions. This situation is referred to as Geographic Segmentation in the marketing literature. As a result of the study, it was revealed that geographical segmentation, psychographic segmentation, geodemographic segmentation and socio-economic segmentation strategies were mentioned in Ibn Khaldun's work called Muqaddimah.
