Notes
In biographical works aiming to determine the competence of narrators in terms of hadith science, one comes across records about whether some narrators dyed their hair and beards. This article aims to determine in what period and with what effects these data, which are not directly related to cerḥtaʿdīl, entered biography-type works. The increase in the records in question at the beginning of the 3rd century Hijri requires that the issue be addressed within the framework of the social, political and scientific debates of the period. When the issue is examined from this perspective, the records regarding hair and beard dyeing are related to the Miḥne incident and Ahmed b. His connection with Hanbel attracts attention. Apparently, he positioned the hair and beard dyeing activity, which he saw as a sunnah that wanted to be revived, as a form of passive resistance targeting political power. However, with his early painting activities, Aḥmed b. Each of the activities during and after the Ḥanbel period differs in terms of style, purpose and addressees. As a result, the article both discusses the periodic effects in the ricāl texts and follows the changing adventure of the meaning attributed to the painting activity through the narrative texts.
