The Ottoman Empire was founded by Turks, but as it developed and spread to different geographies, it naturally moved away from its initial structure and gradually reached a multinational and multicultural state and society. This structure, which continued for centuries, was intended to be placed within an administrative and legal framework with the Tanzimat Edict of 1839, as a result of the Westernization/modernization efforts that started from the 18th century. In this context, regulations were made for non-Muslim citizens living in the country. The regulations, which were drawn up according to a law-based and egalitarian principle, were considered by the intellectuals as a part of the principle of Ottomanism, and the literary figures, thinkers and journalists of the period wholeheartedly supported this period. With the ideology of Ottomanism, the visibility of non-Muslims and, in parallel, women, increased in social life. Poets and writers of the period especially saw the women's issue as a "modernization" issue, independent of the ideological process. Women experienced their golden age in this period, when many problems were addressed, especially women's freedom and education. Mithat Efendi, a "writing machine", left works in all literary genres except poetry and became the most prolific artist of the Tanzimat Period. There was no problem left that was not addressed by Tercümân-ı Hakîkat, the most influential and long-running private newspaper of the period, which he owned, and especially by his novels and stories. One of the problems that he sincerely focuses on is the women's issue. The women's issue, which has been discussed in newspaper articles, magazine essays and especially narrative-based literary representations such as novels and plays since Şinasi, Ziya Pasha and Namık Kemal, has found its broadest and most versatile response in the art of Ahmet Mithat Efendi. On the other hand, a significant portion of the characters in his works are non-Muslim characters. Therefore, the love stories of non-Muslim women and Muslim-Ottoman men are frequently encountered in her works. In our study, the love relationships with non-Muslim women in Ahmet Mithat Efendi's novels, many of which result in marriage, are analyzed in the context of individual and social processes. Our aim is to reveal how the non-Muslim and women's issues, which are important issues in the history of Turkey, in the context of multiculturalism and modernization, manifested themselves in the works of the famous novelist of the period in this important and critical period of history.
