This elongated, “spindle-shaped” vase is a pair of vase with inventory number 400-0235. It has gilded bronze decorations on a cobalt blue background. On the front of the body, a pastoral scene bearing the signature "Angel", inspired by Jean-Honoré Fragonard's (1732-1806) painting La Vendangeuse, is depicted in a gilded frame.
The work that inspired “Angel” is part of the series consisting of La Bergère, Le Moissonneur, La Vendangeuse, Le Jardinier paintings that Fragonard created while working in François Boucher's studio. In the series, the work that needs to be done in the fields in each of the four seasons is depicted. He copied only the pose and gestures of the main figure in “Angel,” La Vendangeuse, and made changes to its colors and other details. Unlike the original painting, the female figure collects bouquets of flowers instead of bunches of grapes.
The top of the vase's lid is shaped like an upside down acorn. The gilded bronze handles on both sides of its body are decorated with a leaf at the points where they bend and meet the vase. There are gilded decorations consisting of flowers and leaves on the neck, bottom and back of the body of the vase. Next to the decorations at the bottom, there are two intertwined letters "L", reminiscent of Sèvres style seals, and the number "53" underneath, which probably indicates the production date. The octagonal base of the vase is decorated with flowers and leafy branches.
Fragonard's paintings were often used to decorate porcelain objects. The garden with inventory number 400-0069 in the SSM Decorative Works Collection is another example of this. The scene from Fragonard's painting Les progrès de l'amour: lettres d'amour is engraved on the porcelain on the front of the garden.

This tall and thin, fuseau (spindle-shaped) vase is one of a pair with the vase with the inventory number 400-0235. The porcelain has a cobalt blue ground colour, with gilt bronze mounts. On its front, inside a gilded frame, is a pastoral scene after Jean-Honoré Fragonard's (1732-1806) La Vendangeuse, signed 'Angel'.
The work which provided the inspiration for ‘Angel’s painting is one part of a series made by Fragonard while he was working in François Boucher’s studio, comprising La Bergère, Le Moissonneur, La Vendangeuse and Le Jardinier. These four pastoral paintings depict the agricultural work needed to be carried out in each of the four seasons. ‘Angel’ has only reproduced the posture and gestures of the main figure, while taking liberties with the colors and other details. The female figure is depicted as gathering flowers instead of the bunches of grapes depicted in the original painting.
The finial of the vase's lid is in the form of an acorn. The gilt bronze handles on either side of the body are decorated with leaves on the apex and the point where they join the body. The vase features gilded vegetal decorations on the neck, feet and the back. On the feet, next to the decorations, are two interlaced 'L's reminiscent of Sèvres-style marks and the number '53', likely indicating the year of production. The octagonal pedestal is decorated with flowers and foliate branches.
Fragonard's paintings have been used as inspiration for many porcelain objects. One such example is the cabinet in the SSM Decorative Arts Collection with the inventory number 400-0069, featuring the central scene from Fragonard's Les progrès de l'amour: lettres d'amour.
