The issue of diplomatic health is a fundamental issue for the diplomat. Indeed, it is the first and most delicate issue he faces. (Al-Hilweh, 1965, p. 203) The diplomat achieves his goal of verifying it by studying the form, relying in this on the availability of a documentary accumulation by the creator that allows him to understand the rules of construction followed in issuing his various types of documents, and the extent to which these documents agree with them, and then determining their value as a historical witness. This goal encounters difficulties in achieving it sometimes for multiple reasons, including: documents lose everything that links them to their creator, and then it is difficult to verify the validity of their attribution to him. Here, the formal study stops at the level of describing documentary evidence whose identity is unverified and whose authenticity is not verified in form or substance. The research presents a study of two sales documents belonging to the Ottoman era and claiming to have been issued by the “Wadi Halfa Sharia Court.” The research aims to discuss a methodological problem related to “source criticism.” When do we resort to it? And how is it done? The first axis of the diplomatic approach related to the study of “form” (internal and external description) was applied to the two documents. The issue of diplomatic validity is a fundamental issue for diplomats, and it is the first and most Accurate issue he faces. The diplomat achieves its objective in verifying it by examining the form, relying on the availability of a documentary accumulation of the creator that allows him to the established rules of the publication of the different types of documents and the extent to which these documents are approved, and thus determine their value as a historical witness. This is sometimes difficult to achieve for a variety of reasons, including that the documents lose everything associated with their creator, and therefore difficult to verify the reality of their attribution to him. Here the formal study stops at the rank of description provided by a documentary guide whose identity is not verified and whose validity is not verified in form and content. The research presents a study of two sale documents belonging to the Ottoman era, which claim to have been issued by the “WadiHalfa sharia court”, aimed at discussing a methodological problem related to “criticism of the source” when should we resort to it? How is it used? The first axis of the diplomatic approach, relating to the study of “form” (internal and external description), was applied to the two documents.
