Notes
This article aims to describe the political nature of the language reform initiated in the first years of the Republic. The evaluations made specifically about the language simplification process, whose historical background dates back to the Tanzimat period, differ sharply from each other and create an axis of political polarization. It is possible to talk about two dominant views on language reform: The conservative side insists that language reform is a front that prevents contact with the past (Islam and the Ottoman). The Republican side thinks that the language reform is a bridge that bridges the gap between the state language and the nation's language; He thinks that it is a revolution that helps get rid of the elements that hinder the development of the country. The article examines the question of whether the language reform, which was initiated with the establishment of the Turkish Language Research Society in 1932 as a state policy, was a front that broke the connection with the past or a bridge that ensured the fusion of the state and the nation. In this context, the article presents an alternative perspective on the definition of language reform through the reading of the First Turkish Language Congress, taking into account the discussions on language simplification during the Tanzimat and Constitutional Monarchy periods.
