Notes
This study sheds light on the cultural life in the Hijaz region during the reign of Sultan Abdulaziz bin Mahmoud II in the period (1876-1861 / 1293-1277). It is clear from this study that the Hijaz enjoyed a great status among the Ottoman sultans. This is due to the presence of the two holy cities (Mecca and Medina). The study shows that the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina played a role in cultural development at that time and presented a civilized image of education, similar to the role of universities in our present time. The study shows that the Ottomans, led by Sultan Abdulaziz, were seeking to build a bright image of the Hijaz region, in the face of the distortion that was surrounding them from their enemies in Europe.
