An Arabic translation in question-and-answer form of the pseudo-Galenic text
Introductio sive medicus
. The Latin title translates the Greek Εἰσαγωγὴ ἢ ἰατρός, while the Arabic isagogic (
Īsāghūjī
) transcribes the first word of the Greek title, Εἰσαγωγὴ (
Eisagōgē
), meaning ‘Introduction’. The Arabic version was begun by Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq al-‘Ibādī (ca 809-873) and completed by his nephew, Ḥubaysh ibn al-Ḥasan al-Aʻsam (see note explaining this on title page, f. 28r, lines 3-6). The title page also gives an alternative title for the text: Hunain Issues with Ziyadat Habeesh (
Masā’il Ḥunayn bi-zīyādāt Ḥubaysh
).
Begins (f. 28v, lines 2-5):
The book Isagogi by Galen, translated by Hunayn ibn Ishaq, is tested by it
Medical learners. Galen said into how many parts medicine is divided
He said it is divided into two parts. He said, “What are they?” He said, “Work and action.” How many parts is it divided into?
He said knowledge is divided into three parts. He said, “What are they?” He said, “Knowledge of natural matters.”
Ends (f. 55r, lines 11-15):
Because the fever indicates two things: Either the humours are safe, as it indicates
In severe fevers, it indicates putrefaction, or it indicates that it is healthy, as indicated
On a feverish day, or it indicates that the problem is in the urinary tract, for example
It indicates an ulcer in the kidneys, the bladder, the palms (?), the urine, or the
The penis in a man or in the vulva in a woman
