Notes
Opening of a treatise on making arithmetic calculations by means of a dust board (
takht
) and the so-called 'dust numbers' (
ḥurūf al-ghubār
, see f. 114r, line 14). The text is a copy of the author's own
Kashf maʿānī al-jilbāb ʿan ʿilm al-ḥisāb
, (I excerpted it from my book called Kashf al-Ma’ani al-Jilbaab on the Science of Arithmetic, see f. 114r, lines 12-13).
The full text consists of an introduction, four parts of eight sections each, and a conclusion; the present copy extends only to the sixth section of the first part on whole integers (integer, see f. 114v, line 7).
The text is followed by a page of prayers (f. 120v).
Begins (f. 114r, lines 8-11):
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, says the poor servant
To God, Ali Ibn Muhammad Ibn Ali Al-Qurayshi, known as Al-Qalasadi Al-Basti, may God forgive him with his blessings
His generosity, praise be to God, who hastened the reckoning, brought forth blessings and opened doors, prayers and peace
Upon the Master of the two universes sent to the two heavy ones, as for what follows...
Ends (f. 120r, lines 23-27):
...each share in the money and
Divide the outer one by the front, which is seventeen, so twenty-seven dinars come out for the first one
For the second, fifteen, and for the third, nine, like this
If you want, divide the profit
And He is the One
Fifty over the total shares, which is one...
