Notes Treatise on dietetics for patients suffering from a range of ailments, given as headings in the text, by Najīb al-Dīn Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad ibn ‘Alī ibn ‘Umar al-Samarqandī (Najib al-Din Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Omar al-Samarqandi, d. 1222). The copy was made in Rabīʿ II 984/June-July 1576 (see colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. , f. 98v, lines 18-20, transcribed below). The end of the treatise is followed by an excerpt by Najm al-Dīn Maḥmūd ibn Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn Ilyās al-Shīrāzī (Najm al-Dīn Mahmoud ibn Dhiyā al-Dīn Ilyās al-Shirāzī, d. 1330) on conception, presumably from his medical compendium Kitāb al-Ḥāwi fī ‘ilm al-tadāwī (Al-Hawi’s Book of Therapeutics, f. 99r). Begins (f. 82v, line 2-4): Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds, and prayers and peace be upon the best of creation, Muhammad and his good and pure family, I know best One of the sciences that people benefit from is medical science, which is part of political science Which is the most honorable of the necessary sciences needed for the survival of the human species... Ends (f. 98v, lines 13-14): ...and anyway Of the conditions of the body, a time of the year, a tooth of the teeth, and when every mixture of humors predominates Colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. (f. 98v, lines 15-20 [first two words to either side of colophon Section at the end of a manuscript text. ]): The book is done May God Almighty grant us success in what is more beneficial and more beneficial Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds, and may God’s prayers and peace be upon him On his Prophet Muhammad and his entire family Edited in the month of Rabi’ al-Thani Year four Nine hundred and eighty
