Notes
Arabic version of the
The space
(The Book of Acres) by Theodosius of Bithynia (Theodosius; Θεοδοìσιος; c 160-c 100 BC). The preface (f. 1v, lines 3-5, transcribed below) states that it was translated from Greek into Arabic by Qusṭā ibn Lūqā (Qusta ibn Luke; c 820-912), up to Chapter 3, figure 5, at the order of Abū al-‘Abbās Aḥmad son of the caliph al-Mu‘taṣim bi-llāh (Al-Mu'tasim Billah; reg. 833-842), that the rest was translated by another, and that the translation was corrected by Thābit ibn Qurrah (Thābit ibn Qurrah; d. 901).
The text was copied at Yazd in Jumādá II 1014/October 1605 by Ibn ‘Abd al-Raḥīm Abū al-Qāsim Yaḥyá al-Astar’ābādī (Ibn Abd al-Rahim Abu al-Qasim Yahya al-Astarabadi; see

, f. 62r, lines 8-10, transcribed below). On the title page (f. 7r) and on f. 30r, where the title of this text appears on the lower half of the page, the title and author are given incorrectly as The Book of the Great by Tadousi Aws. Both the title page and the title appearing on f. 30r were written by a hand later than that of the main scribe.
The text is divided into three chapters (articles):
Chapter One (Article One; ff. 30v-37v);
Chapter Two (Article Two; ff. 37v-50v);
Chapter Three (Article Three; ff. 51r-62r).
Numerous diagrams. Notes on smaller slips of paper have been bound into the volume as folios 31, 33, 38, 39 and 42.
Begins (f. 30v, lines 2-6):
This is Theodosius's book Al-Akhar, which consists of three articles and fifty-nine figures
In some copies, there is a missing form in the number, and Abu Al-Abbas ordered it to be translated from Greek to Arabic
Ahmed bin Al-Mu'tasim Billah took charge of transferring it to Qusta bin Luqa Al-Baalbaki to the fifth form of the third article
Then someone else took over the rest of it, and Thabit bin Qurra corrected it. The first article: Twenty-two shapes. The borders are a sphere
It is surrounded by a surface with a point inside it...
Ends (fol. 62r, lines 3-5):
So the arc of NH is similar to the arc of KL, so the arc of HH is greater than the arc of its circle
The semi-arc of KL and also the arc of M-T is similar to H-D, so the arc of K-T is greater than the arc of its circle
A semi-arc and that's what we wanted...
