Notes
A summary by al-Ḥajj Luṭf Allāh, known as al-Khazīndār (الحاج لطف الله الشهير بالخزيندار; see f. 2v, lines 5-6), based on the bibliographical encyclopaedia completed in about 1062/1652 by the Ottoman scholar Muṣṭafá ibn ʿAbd Allāh (Mustafa ibn Abdullah, d.1067/1657), also known as Kâtip Çelebi (Secretary of Forty) and Ḥājjī Khalīfah (Pilgrim Caliph).
The original work begins with an introductory section dealing with the classification of the sciences, followed by the main body of the encyclopaedia in which about 14,500 books are listed alphabetically by title and given some commentary.
The present work is a summary of works on
fiqh
, grammar,
tafsīr
, history and other topics (وغيرها), beginning with a section on Anafī jurisprudence in alphabetical order by title (ff. 3r-48v). The remainder of the summary follows no clear order.
Al-Khazīndār completed the work in 1244/1828-29, and the present copy was finished a year later, in 1245/1829-1830, by the scribe al-Ḥāfiẓ Aḥmad Āghā ibn Muhammad Āghā al-Baghdādī al-Ḥanafī (Al-Hafiz Ahmad Agha ibn Muhammad Agha al-Baghdadi al-Hanafi, see f. 284v, lines 17-18, transcribed below).
Begins (f. 2v, lines 3-9):
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace be upon him
Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions gathered and afterwards
The poor man turned to the mercy of the Almighty Al-Hajj Kindness
Allah, the Known as the Treasurer, does not miss some of us every year
He is against it and cannot defend it if he gets out of the book
Kashf الظنون في أسماء الكتب والفنون لکاتبی
Chalbi al-Rumi al-Islambuli Nabze Yasira.
Ends (f. 284v, lines 9-16):
...وقد فرغت
I swear this book from the author of the exit from the book
Discovery of attitudes towards Assamese books and arts Sana'a
One hundred and twenty-four and forty from the Prophetic Migration
Praise be to the immigrants for the best prayer and the most complete greeting
لله الذي هدانا لهذا وما كنّا لنهتدي لولا أن هدانا
May Allah bless our Prophet Muhammad and his family
وصحبه أجمعين.
Colophon
